Prescription Shooting glasses - bi-focals or just regular corrective lenses without the bi-focal?

Last year, In my ongoing saga of trying to become a better shotgunner I determined two things. First, while I am right handed, I have a dominant left eye. Second, my right eye has a strong stigmatism. Several months ago, I bought prescription glasses. I now shoot my shotgun with a small piece of Scotch tape over my left lens. Don Hughs showed me how to strategically place the tape so that I can not see the bead on the end of my shotgun barrel with my left eye. This seems to work OK for now. BTW - I also noticed that I can shoot my scoped rifle better while wearing my glasses because I can see the target much better with the corrective lenses.

The problem with my corrective lenses is that I need bi-focals in order to see things up close. I just ordered a pair for work. Now to the crux of my question. I am going to order a pair of shooting glasses with yellow lenses. should I get bi-focals or tri-focals or is it best to have only the correction for my nearsightedness (myopia) without the bi-focal. Any thoughts out there? Does it matter at all? Do the bi-focal get in the way or are they OK?

Thanks

I wear my normal tri-focal when shooting shotguns as I keep both eyes open and the target, being far away, is easily in focus.

For handgun I have shooting glasses with my tri-focal prescription only in the non-dominant eye, and a single vision lens set to the focal distance of my front sight in the dominant eye. I am right handed and right eye dominant. This works great for me.

My current eye doctor previously was a competitive handgun shooter and he lets his patients bring their unloaded handguns to the exam to find the best prescription to see the front sight clear and sharp.

Thanks. Sounds like it does not matter if the lenses are bifocals or not for rifle or shotgun. Good to know. Anyone else have an opinion?

I could be wrong but I thought I read or maybe saw something about a bi focal adhesive that you could stick on normal glasses. At the time it sounded like a good idea who knows if it really is though.

Good luck though eye sight is a pain in the arse.

I don't know what kind of money that you want to spend. If I was buying another pair of glasses (everyday wear, and everything else) I would not hesitate to buy another pair of Oakleys. They can also make bi-focals into the lens too. If you go to their website there are tons of options on perscription frames. You do not have to buy "glasses" as alot of their sunglass frames they make for perscription as well.

Here are all the perscription sunglass frames that are available.

Is the bifocal a problem? Is this why they put it on top?

I have the same problem as the OP. Bifocal is too low for sighting, I had the line moved up higher on the lens for my shooting glasses. When I want to see distance at the range, I tilt my head down and look through the top portion of the lens. Hope this helps.

I ordered regular or bifocal for my Marines from a company called ESS(http://www.esseyepro.com/Profile---ICE-Rx-Lens-Inserts_12_detail.html) and they sent inserts that set into ESS safety glasses, motocross/ski type goggles or gas masks. 90% of the guys loved 'em and 10% hated 'em. I thought the versatility was awesome you could change the safety lenses from clear to black to yellow whatever you desired and the inserts were just smaller glasses without arms and clipped solidly onto the nosepiece of the glasses, goggles or gasmask

ESS ICE are the shooting glasses i use for handgunning. Trifocal lens in my left eye and single vision in my right (dominant) eye with a focal length set to have a sharp clear front sight.

The versatility of the ESS ICE is fantastic. Plus if you take a hit in the glasses all damage is a $12 polycarbonate shield that is easily replaceable and your more expensive prescription lenses are protected.

it has been working great for me for several years now.

The Decot glasses seem to be pretty popular with PPC shooters in SE Mich and with shotgun shooters.

Dr. Gauthier in Waterford carries the Decot glasses.

I spoke to my eye doctor about getting glasses that have the bifocal at the top for shooting rifles and handguns. He was familiar with the request.
Aftermarket glasses that you put prescription inserts in are good in case you break the glasses, you can get another pair if the inserts are still good.
Multiple sets of inserts can be of a benefit as well.
