Does anyone know of any near SE michigan or a weekend one or something out of the area(gaurd dog). I have a one year old german shepard and the schutzhund classes that I have found don't seem to want to work with my rotating schedule charging me 80+ dollars a month and I can only make 1 or 2 classes not the 8 recommended a month. Willing to pay for decent training but would like to do it myself with the assistance of a trainer. Schutzhund first choice gaurd dog second but will take what I can get. Send pm if you are a legit trainer. Otherwise post ideas. Thanx.

Creating a real "schutzhund" takes a ton of work, not only after the training but ongoing throughout the dog's whole life. You're basically training your dog to go completely spaz at your command... but dogs have minds of their own and can't be relied upon to wait for your OK.

It's no surprise that the trainers won't work around your schedule... it's serious stuff and requires a metric *****-ton of work.

And given the recent ordinances that more and more cities are enacting about "vicious dogs", you might want to do a little re-think about what you want to turn your dog into.

In any case, if you go for it, consider boosting your liability insurance coverage by about a million bux.

Not preachin', JMHO.

I disagree (respectfully) I have had the honor in the past to be affiliated with a handler of a Schz III Doberman who was as stable as a rock. The whole point of spending thousands of hours training a schz dog is to put their drive on a switch, when the switch flips it's on in a big way but the switch DOES need flipped, I have never heard of a dog (and handler) sound enough to make it through schz trials just flipping out and going off on somebody without a very good reason. There's a GSD breeder in the SW part of the state that does some schz stuff but it is big $$$$ and a serious dedication of time.
