I heard a while back that the legislature was thinking about amending the law so that one could use rifles chambered for pistol cartridges during the firearms deer season in zone 3 (the shotgun zone).
Is this true? Or has the law been changed?

Thank you for that.....is this bill still in limbo, or is it working it's way through the process ?

the ironic part about this is some of these game ranches in zone 3 allow there parties to use a rifle when hunting deer....

Well I am in favor of it because most of the pistol calibers will only generate around 1800 fps or so anyway.
The straight wall part is OK I guess but actually rounds like the 44/40 and the 38/40 would be safe too.
Probably the way to do it is with a limit on velocity of around 1800 and let it go at that.
I'm really not for it, I started using an Encore pistol in zone 3 a few years back to get away from the shotgun and I use a .444 Marlin barrel. If this new bill pass, then they will probably limit pistols to pistol cartridges less than 1.80" too. Anyone currently legally hunting with straight wall rifle catridges like .375 Win, .444 Marlin,450 Marlin, 45/70 Govt., and 460 would have these cartridges taken away. If you want to hunt in zone 3 with a straight wall cartridge, why not pick up a single shot pistol or a revolver that is cambered in any straight wall chambering either pistol or rifle versus having the law changed and limit all of us to pistol cartridges? :shake:

I don't think they should restrict handguns like they suggest with rifles, but it would be nice to be able to use a rifle. Also, it would help the hunters who are not yet 18, but don't want to use a shotgun.

Gman, you bring up a point about straight walled cartridges that I have always wondered about....that is how is 'straight walled' defined in the law? Does it mean any non bottle necked case? or do they mean that it is the same diameter at the base (ahead of the rim) as at the neck?
If they mean the latter, then the 375 Winchester and the 38/55 do not qualify. (there may be more)
Does anyone know this?

Currently straight wall cartridge definition includes any non-bottle neck, my .444 that I use is tapered, so is the 45/70 that I have and use in zone 3. There was an answer to this question on the DNR's FAQ, but they don't support this part of their website anymore so I can't access it now. I believe I have it printed and filed though...just don't know where I filed it.>:(

The bill is stupid. The minimum case length makes several calibers that are legal in handguns illegal in rifles. 9mm, .40 and .45ACP (all rounds that do not get any velocity benefit to speak of from the extra barrel length, and thus don't alter the useful range of the round) just to name a few. All the guys with .357 and .44 lever guns ( which see a substantial increase in velocity and range) are stoked...How nice for you, but us poor Hi-Point, Kel-Tec and Beretta carbine slobs are SOL.
I hope it fails as written.

the 1.8" is case length only the .460 would still be legal,in a 18-20" barrel would be a 250-300 yard gun.
cant wait to it passes so i can get a 20" encore barrel
