Hello,

I am new to coyote hunting and was wondering how 17hmr is for a coyote round? I know .223, 22-250, .243, etc. is far better but if im not mistaken in Michigan you can only use a rimfire to hunt at night correct?

So I was wondering how the round would do in the day? I know I wouldn't take any shots farther than 75-90 yards with it. I plan to get another .223 for it in a few weeks but until then I wanted to keep going out and only have the 17 on hand.

Not a big enough round for coyote imo. You'll hear alot of guys say just shoot'em in the head, which tells me that they have not done much calling or taken many coyotes. You would be much better off with a shot-gun,loaded with the biggest LEAD shot you can find (at least BB size)or hevi-shots "dead-coyote" load for night hunting.During the day go with #4 buck.

I think it would be fine to killed one you saw running in your yard or field.....But a steady diet I would think the smallest I would use would be a 22 WRM.... the bullet has more mass and will deliver more energy to the yote for the kill.

17 is a good squirrel gun kinda small for coyote

I recently lost one to what I thought was a well placed 22 WMR round. I'm convinced a shotgun is the best option while hunting the night.

My buddy shoots coyotes at 75 yards. At first he tried .17HMR, but had a lung-shot 'yote run about 100 yards and he didn't want to have to chase 'em and tried his .22WRM and is much happier with the performance. I wouldn't want to use shot at 100 yards, but I wouldn't hesitate to use a .22 mag.

I agree on the mag way better for yotes. I own both and the .17 is great for woodchucks and smaller game. It will drop a fox or yote with a head shot but easier said than done at night. My vote is the mag hands down.

I would say the mag would be better for yotes

I love it. Shot placemate adds to the challenge plus tracking the game helps hone my abilities for deer so no problem with tracking 50,60 or more yds. I have hunted yotes with a bow for years and just recently jumped on the 17 hmr band wagon. Its a blast! This bullet is pretty versatile as some posters have stated. I would say that yotes would be the very extreme limit of this round. Squarrels with this round is cool but it does some devistation. Same with partridge. Ground hogs personally for me is the coolest to shoot with this round.

Shot a lot of coyote in traps would not use 17hmr for hunting. I use a 22 mag or my 204 ruger.

I have to say that a 22 mag is best but have had some strangely lucky shots with my 17 HMR savage. Kinda like using 22-250 also. :smoke:

+1 on the 22-250

You'd be happier with the .22mag.

i use a 17 rem for day hunting fields, and a 10 or 12 ga when hunting the swamp. the rem is a little light, but i have never had one go more than a couple steps, at night i have used a 22 mag, but am not comfortable with it being enough on a big dog and a less than stellar shot, so ive gone back to the shotgun. i killed one trying to get our dog with a 17 mach II, this was out the sliding glass door at about 20 yards, quartering away into the boiler room, he went about an additional 20 yards, not the best choice in firearm, but it was handy

I haven't yet hunted coyote myself, but I read a lot of hunting literature and .17HMR seems to be pretty popular for when you're trying to preserve the fur. However, if I were personally building a coyote gun I'd probably go with the .22-250. :twocents:
