Hey guys, I've been looking around and doing research of a while, but I can't seem to find any information on where in Michigan in the Lapeer-ish area there are any ranges where there are some longer shooting lanes than the 100-200 yarders I see... I'm looking for anything longer than that I guess, but something like 500+ yards if that even exists around here would be amazing. Anyone know of any places like this? I'm willing to drive a little for that of course, so like an hour away wouldn't really be a problem with me.

Thanks guys, my first post, but this is a pretty cool forum you've all got here :-) Happy shooting

Washtenaw Sportsmen's club has a 300 and a 600 yard range. They have open practice on Wednesdays during the summer (beginning in April), Nice bunch down there. I plan to practice there this Summer.

I believe if you want 500+ you will have to go to private property.

I don't know of any public range or club in Michigan with a range over 300 yards

Wow, good suggestion, I might have to head down there on a Wednesday next month and embarrass myself a little trying to throw some lead down range :) Thanks a lot for the tip

Anyone else know of any other ranges that have longer than average firing ranges?

I have never been there but it is my understanding that you have to qualify to shoot the 600 yd range and maybe the 300 so you don't waste everyone's time.

Like Garandpa said, they have Wed night practices open to the public. That being said, if you go there, you should have a good idea what a 600yd zero is on your gun. It's also prone shooting (no benches).
Closer to Lapeer might be the Blue Water club north of Port Huron. They also have a 600yd range.

From their website:

New Shooters: New shooters are required to come earlier (12:00 to 1:00 pm) to have their rifle zero confirmed at shorter range (100 or 200 yards) while demonstrating shooting proficiency before being allowed to shoot at the 600 yard distance. Long Range Qualification Cards are issued to new shooters for use at future practice sessions or club matches. Line Safety Officer has final say.

Washtenaw sportsman
Blue Water
There is a 600yd. range in Midland
Cadillac
Camp Grayling for 1000yd.
Camp Parry for 1000yd.

the last wednesday of the month is a 300 and 600 yard practice. be prepared to pull targets in the pits. just a heads up so you were aware that theres work included in the shooting...

I wish there was somewhere close to Howell that had some longer ranges. Can't afford the membership fees nor gas to head to washtenaw or blue water

miller has made a good suggestion in looking to the MRPA sight for information. To his list I would add Midland. They have frequent 600 yard prone & HP events. Before you make the drive, share the trip with a friend and it will lower the cost, be sure to contact each club as to their requirements. Each club will be a little different but most that I've been to require some sort of shooter verification to be sure you will be at least on the target at longer ranges. No big deal, just a few rounds, usualy with an RSO or a couple rounds at a thermometer target, to be sure that you know what your doing and know your come up's. These days no one can afford a round over the burum and out of the club, if you know what I mean!!! Washtenaw is a good club with good people but unless something has very recently changed the Wednesday practice is no longer "open to the public". You must be a member or an invited guest. Like I mentioned, calling ahead is always a good idea.

Give it a good go! Not much is more satisfying than throwing an X at 600!!!

Well it's not a public range but at my local private range the long range goes out to 600 meters. Short range has 25 yds, 50yds and 100yds all covered bench rest. $75 a year for a membership but well worth it.

Other than the National Matches, does anyone know if Camp Perry allows civilians to use their ranges?

The Ohio Rifle Pistol Association holds all of their service rifle (EIC and NRA), match rifle and long range matches there. You could google ORPA but I don't believe they've joined the 20th century yet. The last match I shot with them (this may) had the results written in LONG HAND...

Barb Smith has a hand in things if you wanted to call. She's the only P.O.C. I have for them. Send me an email and ill give you her phone number...

Actually, what I wondering is if they ever open the ranges to regular 'Joes' to shoot. I'm not looking to shoot in competition, I just wanted to shoot something more than 100 yards. I'll try getting in touch with the base commander.

dont waste your time...

not going to happen. someone has to man range control, someone has to man the range towers and someone has to be in contact with range control while the range is hot. not going to happen for any "regular 'Joes'"...

the impact area of the range is lake erie. there is a restricted area that extends from the base and when the ranges are hot, they have to post notification with the FAA (Notams) and they usually have the coast guard or local LEO marine units on standby as well...

Sigh. Well one can always hope or dream. I remember my dad shooting there once in a 1K yard match that required competitors to man the pits when they weren't shooting. I was only around 12 at the time, but I helped out in the pits too. I was hoping it would be something they would consider doing occasionally, say a couple times a year.

ltdave
09-02-2010, 02:30 PM
yeah. if youre a competitor you have to do pit duty...

they dont have the manpower or the money to open it up to just any ol' joe...

last wednesday of the month, blue water sportsmans association has 300 and 600 yard shoots. you have to pull pits there too...

there MIGHT be one more for september but i dont know for sure...

usually only april through august or maybe september...

The three to six would be fun for a MGO long range shoot with say a small prize for the winner and a $10-20 entry fee that goes to the club?

I can't make a day of it but if it's sunday the 17th from 12-3, i'd be in..unless LGC throws a final 3gun match on that day. Someone gonna buy a pack of SR-C (or other) targets so we can all score on the same type of target? I have no idea if ML sells targets.
