minimum distance to hunt from an occupied dwelling?

I remember in my hunter saftey class that there is a part of Michigan Firearms Law that states it is illegal to discharge a firearm (hunt) within _________feet of an occupied dwelling without the express permission of the owners. What is that distance number?????

The "02" hunting guide say's all area's within 150 yds. of an occupied building, house, cabin, or any other building used in a farm operation.

150yds=450 feet. Applies only to hunting. Does not apply to indoor or outdoor shooting ranges, target shooting, etc... (p10) of hunting guide.

Thanks for the replies! I went out to my property with a measure wheel today....seems I can find a spot with a 450ft distance to both neighbors' house/barn. I was worried!

I believe that if you have their permission then you could hunt closer.
Check with legal eagles first.

The safety zone is 450 feet. It does not apply to target practice, only hunting and all hunting including bow. You can violate someone's safety zone if you have the owner's permission.

The Michigan Hunting and Trapping Guide on Page 10. Some townships do have more restrictive laws. But I refer to the hunting guide book.

Thanks all! I think I can find a site on my property that's "legal" for building my permanent blind.....provided my neighbors don't put up a new garage or something!

If your neighbors put up a garage, just look at it as another opportunity. Pay for the installation of a window and you will have another blind.

The townships that may have more restrictive laws are done through the DNR by way of a public hearing which is then recommended for a local hunting control and may prohibit certain types of hunting. These types of hunting however does not change the safety zone law. One can search for local hunting controls for their county here;

I really wish Id kept all the hunting/fishing rules back since I first started reading them. Anyone know of a website w/ rules back to 60's or so.

Reason being when the 150 yards rule first came in I believe it was for shooting firearms-ie not bow. Then somewhere along the way it was changed to hunting.

Target shooting is exempt but dont bet 5 cents on the sheriff (or MSP) reps who roll to your range to know that. Have the DNR rule book with yourself.
