I don't do birds. (not sure if you mean bird hunt , skeet, or trap - but I don't do any of it)

So that means I can't do sporting clays?

I am a "passionate" Sporting Clays enthusiast and recommend it to everybody.
It offers variety, and challenge, unlike any other shotgun sport.
Commonly called "Golfing with a Shotgun".
Preferably, an over/under 12 gauge is used, although autoloaders are common as well. "Pumps" are very difficult for "doubles".
Most courses don`t want you to use any shot larger than 7 1/2. Overall, No. 8`s are best."Close ups" , use No.9.
I gave up Skeet long ago for the variety offered in Sporting Clays.

What choke do you use?

I shoot an Over/Under, so I use Skeet on the bottom, "IC" on top. I also switch barrels depending on presentation. Sometimes I move to an "IC" on the bottom, and light modified on top.
I have found that 28" barrels do better with tighter chokes, 30" barrels are better with looser chokes. I usually use 30" barrels.
This is why I prefer "Clays" over all other shooting sports.
The variety is greater.
Different kinds of birds.(Regular, Midi, Mini,Battues,Rabbits)
Different presentations, and angles. (Rising, crossing, quartering,on the ground, and then in bewildering combinations)
Different terrain.
Try it!

Uggh, I learned this the hard way. I tried sporting clays at a place near Rapid River while visiting my brother in law. Despite my poor score, I had a great time. I wish there was a place near where I lived.

Steve,
I hear that course up in Rapid River is excellent.
If you ever have to shoot "Clays" again with a "Pump", ask to shoot "Pairs" as "Report Pairs". This method releases the second bird on your Gun`s "report". Much more forgiving for a Novice using a "Pump".
...And after all, it`s all about having Fun!
Where are you?
I`ll find you a "Clays" Course nearby.

You are right about the course in Rapid River. It is still in the process of being built, but what they have is pretty nice. Unfortunately, I live near Lansing and do not get there all that often.

I just started shooting Trap this summer.

Lots of fun.

I think Sporting Clays are next.
