BLACKS CREEK – Police are still investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting near Blacks Creek.
Deputies were called to the scene at 4:51 p.m. Saturday. A bystander reported a man had been shot in the stomach.
Ada County Sheriff’s Deputies and Ada County Paramedics responded and learned a 15-year-old and his 43-year-old father had been out target shooting when the teen accidentally shot his dad.
The boy told deputies he was walking and then tripped. As the boy began to fall, he said he accidentally discharged the .22 pistol he was carrying. The father was hit once in the stomach.
The father was airlifted to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center with what appeared to be a non-life-threatening injury.
Detectives investigating the incident say that all information and evidence gathered indicates the 15-year-old unintentionally fired the pistol.
No charges are expected to be filed and police are urging the public to be aware of firearms safety and to follow it at all times.

Safety should have been on while walking around with a gun in his hand.

Safety starts at the brain
Alot of guns don't have safeties..

Yah.. I was thinking finger shouldn't have been on the trigger.
Don't know of any .22 pistols that won't fit in a holster except maybe the new Kel-Tec. Don't like safeties, never have & don't trust them. Besides, it's something extra for me to think about when I REALLY need to be shooting.
Now for whoever is going to tell me to practice, I can't afford to practice with every gun I own every day. My carry gun doesn't have a safety except my BRAIN. So far that has worked just fine.

Maybe, the father and the son had never received any formal training in firearms safety and handling.
He could have been one of those guys that spouts off "I grew up with guns, I've been handling guns all my life, I don't need some class on how to handle a gun".
He could have been out there teaching son, but he couldn't teach what he didn't know.
Maybe he just didn't know any better.

I agree. Finger on the trigger, chambered round, loaded gun, etc...

All factors I which contributed to this. Glad that his dad is going to be ok, that would be a terrible thing to live with if he killed or maimed his father.

I don't know what the kid was doing walking around with it. If you are not on the line, the piece should be unloaded.

My Ruger Mark 3 with red dot doesn't fit in a holster. But I do use the 2 saftey's...the one on the gun, the other in my Skull...finger out of the trigger guard! I was target shooting with a buddy out in the woods yesterday, so we were walking around...nothing wrong with that. I starting feeling dumb everytime I'd squeeze the 2 1/2 lb trigger wondering why it wouldn't go bang...forgot to switch the safety off, did that 3-4 times.

Soooo.... Maybe the dad should have went over the 4 basic rules before letting the son handle the gun?

Well, I hope the dad will be okay, especially for the boys sake.

Unfortunate for everybody involved. Hopefully some people learn a lesson from this. Personally, none of my pistols have a safety, but that doesn't make them unsafe. If you are just target shooting, keep the chamber clear until ready to shoot.
