Anyone know if a club around Detroit has weekend IDPA practices? Racoon Hunters in Romulus used to have weekend practices but now they are only on Wednesday nights. With my work schedule only weekends are going to work.

Wurm, help me out here! :)

Any insight is appreciated guys. Thanks!

Unfortunately for you the match season is upon us so most IDPA clubs move their practices to a weekday so as to not overlap with matches in the area. Like you mentioned, Raccoon Hunters moved their practice to Wednesday, so did Linden I believe. Detroit Sportsmen's Congress is moving their practice to Monday nights. If you are limited to weekends and really want to shoot IDPA you may just have to come out to matches instead. DSC is having their first match of 2010 this coming up Saturday. I know it isn't what you are looking for but matches really are a great time. We get new shooters at matches all the time. I was just squadded with a new guy this past Saturday at Raccoon Hunters and he sure seemed to be smiling the whole morning. My first time shooting IDPA was at the DSC October match a couple of years ago and those guys out there can't get rid of me now :)

If matches just aren't your thing, there is always USPSA (IPSC). I don't get to shoot it as much but I believe DSC has Saturday evening practices (though don't quote me on this). I can put you in touch with the guy who sends me emails about their matches and practices if you want. Production division is somewhat similar to IDPA if you aren't familiar with it.

If you are up for a match, let me know and I'll keep an eye out for you at DSC. If you show up with enough time, I can go over everything with you and make sure you get squadded with people who can help you out. If you want to try another club's match let me know and if I'm going we can squad together.

There are more than a few clubs that don't participate in the summer IDPA/IPSC match season and having a weekend practice might be a good option.

I too would would much prefer to run some practices on the weekends if possible due to my work schedule.

I know of at least one club that would have made an excellent candidate for a weekend IDPA type practice event since they got rid of their IDPA events anyway and have 5 rear bays that pretty much just sit empty on weekends. I would have even volunteered to help set up and coordinate a weekly Saturday morning practice...

Thanks Jim, until we get weekend practices like Kevin and I are looking for, I may just have to do the Match thing. This weekend is out as I'm getting my car ready for the Waterford track this Sunday. So looks like next event is the May 15 Match at Raccoon Hunters. I shoot a Dan Wesson 5" 1911 in .40cal so I think that places me in a Enhanced Service Pistol division. If your firearm works in the same division as mine, let's squad together.

Let me know what you think!

I just went to the Racoon Hunters web site but could not find their address.
Can someone pass it on to me....or directions??
Also, they mention " classifying" for IDPA...am I right in guessing that means some shooting test to see what level of a shooter you are?

Thanks for the help.

Don't know about classifying for the match. I'm just showing up and tell them I'm a Novice since it's my first match.

If you guys are new to IDPA, don't worry about classifying for your first match. Every club I've ever been to is more then happy to let you shoot without needing to be IDPA members or classified. You just go in as a novice. After your first match you are supposed to join IDPA and shoot a classifier once a year. Some clubs may be sticklers about that but I've seen a few that aren't.

Tapandrack, I'm shooting a Glock 35 currently in SSP but it won't make a difference making up a squad. We mix and match shooters. It is fun watching better shooters or guys with revolvers shoot. I always enjoy seeing how the poor wheel gunners have to do things. My other main competition gun is a 9mm 1911 which I do shoot in ESP but it has been in the safe this season. I told myself I'd get good with the Glock so that is all I've been shooting lately.

Then there is South Kent Sportsman's Club in Dorr where the Michigan State Championship is being held this year (just sent my app in). Great group of people over there. I highly recommend going if you want to have a good time. Also, the Great Lakes regional is next month at the Linwood-Bay Sportsman's Club in Munger. I will be there shooting Sunday. If you are further out in Michigan take a look at http://www.idpa.com/ and see if there is a club near you. Michigan has a ton of IDPA clubs.
