had a nice buck show up at 6:20 hang out until around 6:40 and walk away before I had enough light to shoot at it. Had a nice view of the head and neck but he was behind a few small evergreens.
Missed another buck this afternoon. Oh well it happens I guess. D***it
Taurus versus the Buck
30.06 at 18-20yrds Buck wins hands down and comes away without a scratch
Pretty sad this is one of the Marines finest "snipers" they trained and can't hit something that big at 20yrds away.
Ok I am running now, I need to look for a good hiding spot before he reads this

maybe it's because we are not used to shooting at things that close?

Well Taurus92 I have joined the club I missed a nice doe today, 75-80 yard shot with my .44 pistol. I took a hand full of hair off of her back but that dose not fry-up well. I have qualified at WWCCA on the 100 yard range with the Super Red Hawk last year but I must have some memory loss  . I hope tomorrow is better :D .

My son and I saw many on opening day...one buck, a group of 6 does and a duo of does twice...however they were all 260-350yrds away! I'll be out there by myself at 6:30am Monday morning (no Sunday hunting in Hillsdale Co.). That's when I'll get one...I'll bet it will be a sight to see me lugging a 200lb deer without my boy to help!!!

I got this 10 Sat. night at about 5:30. He was chasing a doe about 100 yards out and it was just starting to rain when I shot him. He ran about 60 yards and crashed into a swamp. A buddy and I looked for blood for almost an hour in the rain when we found him laying in about 6 inches of the foulest smelling water one could imagine.

Not looking good folksI counted 14 from the U.P. to a check station (in a weigh station)that I think was near West Branch... IT was jammed packed.... I think that more people are stowing their deer somewhere....

life's a beach ain't it Koug.
I might be traveling for work 3 to 6 weeks at a time, home a week, then gone again...at least I have a choice though, don't know if I'm going to do it or not.
Kinda shoots the snowmobile season and any real life for 7 months. But I get to travel the entire country, with possibilities of 3 weeks in Honolulu and Anchorage on the company dime... WOO HOO..

slow start to the season
In Mid Michigan (north of Lansing) near Elsie I should say I saw 5 (2 doe in shooting range) but since i have 2 bucks with my bow i need a big doe and opening morning is not the right time at least for me. My cousin saw a big 7 pt (17inches and about 175ish) in the same tree i got my 6 pt he and a neighbor shot and the neighbor claimed it (long bad story)
Not a ton of shooting (only 3 in our 1 square mile section) we are 6 miles south of the rifle border and normally it sounds like a war zone from the north but it was quiet too quiet.
I came home on sunday nite and saw Zero on I-75 saw more here locally (sterling hgts) this morning going to work
reports from buddies in the upper are slow and the bucks are smaller racks
Oh well there is always the weekend

It looked close to usual on my way back Sunday, early afternoon. However there were not a lot of vehicles in the check station just above Birch Run.
Story on the TV news Sunday night that the DNR felt that the hunter numbers in the northern part of the lower penninsula were below the number that they had anticipated.
There are private property antlerless tags still available in the DMU we hunt--at least there were Sunday morning and the last two years they were sold out by early November.

I shot a 5-point at 8:15 on opening day. My wife's aunt and uncle run a processing business and said that they had 40 come in on opening day, 45 the next day and around 50 on monday (though it was only noon).

Congratulations to the rest of you who are lucky/skilled enough to fill your tags this season.
I probaly won't set foot in the deer woods this season, (my choice) but plan to give 'em hell next year!

Great opening weekend. Even though I only saw one doe. Passed on a 1 1/2 year old spike on Saturday. Saw an older buck that didn`t allow for a good shot. He had a tall rack 10-12 inches, but I couldn`t see anymore than the height.
Sunday evening about 4:45 I shot a 2 1/2 year old(aged by the DNR) 6 point. Weighed 104 pounds field dressed. One shot between the shoulder blades at about 100 yards. Longest shot I have ever taken at a deer. He was facing me head on, turned his head to his right, the shot entered between the shoulder blades and exited through the spine at the back of the rib cage. This is the 4th year on my property and this is the first buck we have taken.
Not much shooting in the area after 8:30 opening morning. It was hard to even tell it was firearm season.
Not a very good year in our camp. We hunt northeast of Grayling and in years passed I have seen lots of does every year. This year I hunted Saturday through Friday and only saw 4 doe and no bucks. My brother saw deer the first couple of days but then nothing after that. My buddy managed to get a spike on opening morning.
This deer was much bigger than it looks in the picture (dwarfed my buddies spike). I am a big boy and I had a heck of a time hoisting this thing into my truck by myself. I couldn't tell you how much it weighed but the DNR aged it at between 8 and 10 years old. I am going back up over Thanksgiving and hope to fill another tag or two.

I hunt in my back yard (hillsdale county) we have forty acres, ended up using my buck tag on a wounded 3pt. who had two broad heads and multiple gun shot wounds. Most of the meat had to be tossed. Lucky for me that doe permits were still to be had. Got a nice 100lb doe so jerky for me and the grand kids :D

Pappabear, we are just about neighbors! I only have 5 acres in
Somerset, but I built a very nice blind and am still waiting to get me one!! I'll be out first thing in the Morning...it was just too windy today. At this point I'd be thrilled if a wounded something-or-other wandered by!!! I've been out nearly every day so far (a few exceptions)...seen several, but not close enough.
