I'm new to shotgunning and want to try sporting clays. Where's a good place to go for a first-timer who doesn't want to spend a ton of money?

Shooting skeet is usually pretty cheap. Around here it's like $3 or $4 a round depending on whether or not you're a member.

Big difference between skeet and sporting clays. Might want to try Multi-Lakes;

Nice sporting clays course, btw. I've never shot it, but I have seen it.

Island Lake has a pretty nice setup. It's just off 96, East of Brighton. 19.00 for 50 targets, plus 6 or 20 for the parking sticker.

Thanks for the replies! I'll check those out. Do you guys recommend starting with skeet or sporting clays first?

I know you specifically asked for sporting clays, but if you are also interested in Skeet or trap clays, Washtenaw Sportsman club off I-94 and Mich Ave. is open for public on Sundays (from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm) for $5 per a round of 25.

Also West Wayne club is open for public on Saturdays and Sundays for $6 per a round of 25

Algonac state park has a skeet range. You pay about $5 to get into the park and you can then shoot skeet all day. The down side is that you need to bring your own clay and thrower. I normally go a few times each summer with a group of my friends. Last time I went, I burned through a 250 round case of ammo, and almost that many clays. :hide:

If you are new to clay shooting, I would suggest a couple rounds of skeet before atempting sporting clays. It really helps you get your leads on different angles. In Macomb County there is DSC (Skeet & Sporting Clays) and Huron Pointe (Skeet & Sporting Clays). I think both are around 6 for skeet and 18 for sporting clays. There is Bluewater Sportsmans between Port Huron and Marysville in St. Clair County. They have Skeet & Trap for 4.50.

I had to actually look up "sporting clays". I don't think we have that around here. I thought it just referred to trap and skeet. From the video I watched it looks like it's all doubles from lots of different angles.

Bald Mountain sounds like it is going to have a hell of a sporting clays walk. a mile plus with 45+ throwers from what the RO told me last time I was there. Last week they changed the sign from 1pm to 10am opening time, (winter to summer hours) so I imagine the clays will be close behind. they have trap and skeet as well. just discovered bald mountain a few weeks ago and ive already been about 8 times. its great, an hour from me but worth it completely. 6$ for parking 5$ to shoot all day. i will be there early and often

Does Silver Lake still offer sporting clays on the weekends? I shot there when I lived in Ann Arbor and they always ran a nice little course at a pretty good price.
