My dad has an older Chinese SKS that I plan on borrowing and maybe purchasing from him, When I get it I'll post up some pics...

I only have a brief description, Its a Chinese SKS with a Poly aftermarket stock. w bayonet and one 30rd magazine

With just that info, any clues on what to offer him.

no real way of knowing, without SOME specifics....

is it a pinned or threaded barrel?

Is it a "polytec (sp)?" these seem to , for some reason, command a higher price.

is it a standard SKS, or a "cowboy" version ( shorter barrel ) ? Again... seem to be more money...

has it been converted to take AK mags? some were, and are higher value...

I should have it within a week or so...
I don't own any rifles currently and may try to use this in a 3-gun event, that's my plan anyways.
He's got an M1a1 carbine that I really have my eye on but that's not for sale or borrow... If I'm lucky I may get that when he departs this world...

I paid $160 for one with a wood stock that needed some work, but pics and more info would help.

is it 30 rd tapco mag?

Does he have the oringal factory hinged floor plate mag.

Do the numbers match.

Is it original other wise besides the poly stock.

A nice mint norinco with all numbers matching, with factory stock, cleaning kit, sling, and bayonet is a fair retail price in a store for about $300.

They sell used slightly beat up surplus yugo SKS for $269.

The nornico and polytech have chrome lined barrels, the yugos do not.

See if you can get a few pics and all the crap he is gonna give you, with it.

That's around the price he is asking for it(from me), I seen it about 8 years or so ago when he bought it from a guy at work. I didn't make it over this weekend to get it like I planned... I don't think he's ever fired it

Sounds like a good buy.

If it's never been fired, be sure to clean all the cosmoline out of it, if any, before you fire it. Enjoy it!

I'm sure it's been fired, the previous owner who I used to work with is the one who put the poly stock on it and made it look AK'ish... but my dad's never shot it...

If it's your dad give him $500.00 and call it good. After all, think of all the BS he had to put up with you.

Sorry, but I think people don't need to ask for permission to spend a little money occasionally.

Money's tight right now, wasn't a good idea to buy another gun, I just spent $500 on ammo and training( + a scope and barrel for my shotty)... but I couldn't pass this up. It's probably worth twice what I'm paying for it so if I had to I could dump it.

If you bought that gun for around the 150-160 range you posted earlier that is was, your wife should not be having any issue at all. If she is, you better grow a pair and start letting her know that you could easily get your money back...better yet probably make from $100. up to double of what you paid for it. Then tell her to do that with the shoes, purses, etc. that she buys for herself. Even when times are tough...which they are for most of us, one should not be bitched at for buying somthing that they could easily sell for any profit. If that don't settle her down...send her to the mall.:stirpot:

Just explain to your wife that the SKS is an extremely reliable weapon that fires a cheap yet very potent cartridge. It makes an excellent survival rifle and will aid your family greatly when the zombies start coming.

a numbers matching mint russian, can be $450-500.

They were going for $600 during the gun scare/shortage.

I would take a hundred off for the hacky mods, thought you can weld a new tab on, or buy a new mag. Is this maybe a hunting 5rd mag? I have one of those for my chinese sks, it came with 10 rd mag.

If so no big deal as long as he has the original 10 rd mag, its not biggie that he ground down a tab on an aftermarket mag.

So says $325-$350 since its modded and missing a piece if thats the case.

The mag that wont lock in has same number as the gun. So I'm thinking it was the original mag.

I plan on getting a 5rd hunting mag and atleast 2 bigger ones

any SKS gurus around the east side care to look at it and tell me exactly what I got and if i need anything else?

post up some pics if you can.

I am but a few miles from you, i am in GPW.

Do you mean a hinged floorplate 5 rd mag.

Or do these sell aftermarket 5 rd detachable mags?

On my chinese sks i have the 10 rd factory, used to hunt with it as i had a aftermarket ... kinda rare hinged 5 rd mag.

I also have a bunch of steel DCI mags. They dont make those anymore, i heard they sell for $60-80 each.

At any rate i hear different things about the tapco aka crapco detachable plastic mags. Some folks seem to think they are a good compromise, but i would value jam free 10 rds over jam o matic or cracked plastic 30 rds in shtf.

If you have stripper clips you can load pretty fast, and the beauty of the sks is that it is a little bit more accuarate than most AKS and half the price of a modest ak (saiga excluded pre conversion).

The beauty of the sks is a $250-350 gun that shoots a great rd, you cant break it if you try, it doesnt wear out, and doesnt jam. To me it looses all its charm and function if you put to much faith in giant crapco mags.

The one exception being the Norinco SKS that were converted in china at the factory to accept AK mags. Those are very neat. I want one of those someday.

It is my understanding that the mags in sks are hand fitted and swapping, might recquire a bit of fitting on your part. So this is why the tapco 30 rd aftermarket mags are not a sure thing for all folks.

I never cared enough to invest the time or energy or money.

I love my sks for what it is, but i also have 2 aks, and a FAL, so i do not need a 30 rd sks, as i can only shoot one gun at a time anyways.

is that everything dk?

No wood stock, no sling, no oil kit, cleaning kit?

Everything thing there $300 would be fair.

They are selling yugo sks with no chrome lined barrels for $269.

Be sure to look up the laws on the folder in michigan. You will want to register that as a michigan pistol, or get a wood stock, or maybe a chinese fiberglass stock.

I think you can get either one for $10-20.

I think that is a slightly newer version of the 1990s ATI stock. I have 3 stocks for mine, and i bought that one back in the mid/early 90s when i was a unsophisticated 14 year old with paper route money burning a hole in my pocket. Mine is very wobbly at the hinge.

I would just put it in the parts pile, and get wood stock if you can.

The stock mag should be a 10 rounder. I'm betting there is nothing wrong with the stock mag, but you have to remove the trigger group to seat it- safety on, push little indent at rear of trigger guard with a phillips screwdriver or bullet tip and pull down. Insert mag and reinstall trigger assembly- might take a sharp slap of the hand to seat. I'm also betting that the stock mag will work better than that 30 rounder.

No need to register; It's OAL is >30" even with the stock folded (We measured).
