any ideas where i can find one of these barrels inexpensively? how important is a fully rifled barrel? i would prefer a smooth bore if it will save money...

smooth bore you can not shoot Sabot slugs like the SST, partition gold ect.

you can only shoot rifled slugs, yes much cheaper, but it does limit range somewhat.

you can shoot rifled slugs out of any barrel, they will shoot better with IC choke.

Noah, what did I tell you about this, just get a straight shooting Mosin Nagant and take care of business.

That's not entirely true, you CAN shoot sabot slugs, it just won't do you a bit of good except piss-poor accuracy and the additional cost. Depending on the range you plan on shooting a smooth bore and rifled slugs may be fine.

+1 For less (possibly much less) than the price of just a barrel (even just a smoothbore barrel) you can buy a nice Mosin and have new gun, a piece of history, and great/fun shooter all in one! Just make sure you wont mind the heft. It isn't too bad, unless you plan to hike/walk a lot while hunting or getting to your spot.

go buy a few boxes of cheapo slugs at meijer, get some typing paper our of your printer, go shoot them at 15, 25, 40, 50 yards and see how your current barrel shoots them.

if you are hunting the woods of west michigan, your probly fine with what you got.
