For 45 I personally like 1911. Springfield or Para are my personal choices, but on this forum you will get many different strong opinions from others.

In either case go with what works and fits you best and what you have personal confidence in.

I recently purchased my first 45 ACP a Springfield 1911-A1 Loaded.. A 1911 is a must to have.. It is the classical 45 ACP design.. If you have a 1911 already, my next choice would be an FN 45 or a Glock 21 SF ..

Edit: oops.. I missed the OP request for "single stack".. The FN and the G 21 are not single stack but I love these gun in 45 in general.

The only proper answer to getting a single stack .45 is a 1911.

you know Bersa makes a single stack "Compact Thunder .45" and the Glock 36 is one also. I have a Springfield 1911a1,Bersa .45 and a Glock 36 .. the 1911 is ok to carry on the hip,so you need a cover vest or coat. The Bersa .45 is both single and dubble action. I carry it in a shoulder holster. The Glock is new and I have not fired it enough to carry it yet. It does stand night shift guard duty beside the bed.
Have a nice day

I have a Taurus PT1911 ... which is a fantastic, classic 1911 pistol with a lot of high end features for a very reasonable price (in the $500s).

My general advice would be this ... first, decide how much you want to spend ... you can get a single stack .45 pistol from anywhere in the $300s to well over $2000.

Then ... once you've established a budget (say $600-800) go to a range that rents a wide variety of pistols and try to shoot as many of the "candidates" as possible. But the one that "fits best" (i.e. fits well in your hand, has a trigger you like, has the kind of sight picture you want etc.)

Start with the SIG you're considering, and then try out some other "contenders" in the same price range.

The Glock36 is a single stack 6rd mag ,thats why is the slimest glock at 1.13 inches in width.http://www.glock.com/english/glock36.htm You might be thinking of the glock30 thats a double stack .45

Can't wrong with a Sig or 1911 both are excellent weapons, personally I would lean toward the 1911. Even though it is not a single stack, I would really suggest you try out the HK45, it will cost a little more than the sig but it is worth shooting before you make a decision.

I agree it would be best to try as many 45's as possible (rent @ range, shoot friend's guns, etc) to see what suites you best, before deciding to purchase.

That being said, I've owned a Series 80 Colt Goldcup, a Terry Tussey
modded Springfield Armory 45, a Glock 21, and a Colt Govt.model SS 45.
I've shot others, inc. HK USP, AMT, Thompson, Star, and many others.

My last purchase was a Sig 220 ,lightly used, from a MGO lister.

The Sig is the most accurate .45 I've ever shot. I let another MGO lister shoot it last night (he has a nice looking ss Kimber) said he'd never shot a
Sig..he put the first shot dead center bullseye & then grouped the next 4 shots touching in a group, inside a 2" box. He was quite suprised.

In the short time I've owned my 220. it's become my favorite..

Good luck & have fun finding yours...Joepistol..:pistols:

My vote would be for the SIG although a 1911 is also a great choice too..depends on how the guns fit your hands. Try both, and shoot both if you can then make your decision. Good Luck!!

Have you considered a double-stack? One of JimSig's suggestions was the FNP-45. I have one, and love it. It's a bit bigger than the 1911 A-1's I carried once upon a time (and a heck of a lot easier to carry than the AMT Hardballer Longslide I had), but I do like how it feels, it shoots great, and it has 14-round mags.

Just my opinion.

Sig 220 was my first pistol, about 30 years ago (when the mag release was at the heel and not behind the trigger). It was totally reliable. Sorry I sold it. Back then, there were no available accessories for the Sig and so I traded it for a Colt Gov't (Series '70). I had a lot of fun with the Colt. And I spent a fortune on accessories and on making it function reliably.

That said, I'm considering a Springfield 1911-A1 Milspec (the parkerized non-GI model). I've heard great things about it. And I've got a big box of 1911 parts and accessories and only one 1911 to put them on.

But I'd consider a Sig, too.

The various Kahr .45's are slim and don't have any extra controls, so usage under stress can go a bit more smoothly, if you plan on using it as a carry gun.
There's nothing wrong with a good 1911. The Sig 220 and Ruger P90 are both fine guns.

I was interested in the Glock 36 at one point, but I have been told my a few people that the G36 is the only Glock that regularly does not work. I don't know if that's true though.

The main practical differences between the 1911 and Sig are that the Sig comes with no manual safeties, and a heavy DA trigger which awkwardly transitions to single action, a difficult but very feasible thing to master well.

Alternatively, the 1911 has a smooth and crisp trigger pull, with a thumb safety that you want to be very confident you can always remember to deactivate if you're going to carry one.

They're both very good platforms which can have their grips and triggers changed out to fit nearly anyone's hand, but it's an individual choice, not something to decide on with a vote.

This of course doesn't factor in cost differences, or the high possibility of needing a 1911 tweaked at even more cost.

The 1911 has been a favorite for 99 years. The design is just as good now as in 1911. If I had to own just one gun the John Moses Browning 1911 would be it. Oh, and just for the record it still holds the speed shooting record. I own most brands and types of pistols and I still love the 1911.

The Sig GSR is a solid 1911. The full size would be tough to carry, but they do have a Officers frame GSR and a compact (C3 GSR) that would be easier to conceal.

Be ready to pay a hefty price for one though.

I am curious as the why you want to carry a fullsize 1911 when there are much better guns that are smaller and offer more firepower? The 1911 is a classic firearm, with that being said there are much better guns available. If you are looking for a Sig 220 or Sig 1911 call:
Yatin Patel
Phone: 313-492-0724
Fax: 313-928-1099
e-mail: patel@patelsrepair.com

He is a Sig dealer and offers outstanding pricing along with unbeatable service. I have contacted other dealers on this sight and either never head back from them or after repeated PM's and phone calls get informed that are waiting for pricing from their distributor. You will not get that BS from Yatin....he is a straight forward, hard working, dependable and honest businessman.

Better yet post what you want to try and ask current owners to join you at an MGO fun shoot or the Memorial Shoot (if you can wait that long) and try them out. One of the most overlooked and underutilized advantages of attending MGO shooting events.

P.S.
You or anyone else can always post up a time and date and usually several other MGO members will show to shoot with you.

Having owned a P220, and tossed somewhere close to 2000 rds through it, I can't speak highly enough of it. It's a bit heavy IMHO as a concealed carry piece, but as far as the performance, reliability, shootability, comfort, ergonomics, etc etc- I can't praise it enough. I have nothing against 1911's, but the Sig was a Cadillac right out of the box IMHO.

I can't think of any of those listed mission-types that a 1911 wouldn't fill? I'd have to vote 1911 for a single-stack .45. They don't get any slimmer, and the extra controls become automatic with trigger time. If you can learn to drive a car without thinking about the mechanics of actually driving said car, then you can learn to use a 1911.

Steeper learning curve? Maybe. Classic gun? Always. And a crisp single-action trigger with no creep automatically helps eliminate a potential problem area, when compared to the Sig (heavy DA pull for the first pull, then light/crisp SA after that). I've too often seen that first round be a flyer simply because of the trigger pull change up...

I've spent a lot of time selling guns and teaching people to shoot guns. Just because someone is looking at a gun marketed as 'carry' doesn't mean he is specifically searching for a carry gun.

Rather than assume what he meant, I think it's prudent to verify what needs he has for said gun, and be in a position to make a better recommendation from there.

Getting gun advice online is like getting vehicle advice online. Everyone has a favorite and very few people actually dissect the needs for said firearm or vehicle before throwing their two cents in.
