    Brush Stuck in Muzzleloader Barrel

My son has a Thompson Center Hawken muzzleloader. He was cleaning it and the wire brush broke free of the cleaning rod and stuck in the barrel. Any idea how to get it out? Being that it is a side lock, he can't simply push it out the back of the barrel like an in-line.

    Thanks.

I believe there is a product that is inserted in place of the nipple that allows a CO2 cartridge to be used for removing objects stuck in a barrel. Safety is required because the stuck object can become a projectile.

I've never had any luck with it.

    Good and Bad

I've heard both good and bad things about the CO2 dischargers, however, I don't think it will work in this instance since the stuck object is a wire brush. There is no seal to be able to build up pressure. The air will just blow past the brush.

    Another thought

You could try snapping a couple caps and see if it moves it at all. A little Kroil in the bore may act as propellant.

A couple of drops of liquid nitrogen would do the trick.

Try to hook it with a patch puller.

    Tried the patch puller

I tried the patch puller already. It just can't grab the bristles of the brush well enough. Even though it's a 50 caliber, he should have been using a 45 caliber brush because it is a tight 50.

sort of a dumb question.....but what the heck...

did the brush BREAK off, or just twist off the rod?

Might just be as simple as re-threading it back on the the rod.....

    Broke off

I would love it if it were as simply as rethreading the rod onto the brush. However, there is an aluminum piece that screws into the rod. On the other end a coiled wire comes off and the brush bristles are twisted into that coil. What happened is that the aluminum piece seperated from the coiled wire.

He'll have to be much more careful not to use 50 caliber cleaning supplies with this muzzleloader. If you use a 50 caliber jag and patch just to swab the barrel, you can barely get it out.
