You don't say how it's too big but the file size limit is 500K. I think that's a pretty liberal limit but some cameras do save images without a lot of compression. You could try simply opening the file with MS Paint and then re-saving it. If that doesn't do it, you could try using MS Paint to resize the image (stretch/skew) to smaller dimensions. MS Paint is not the ideal answer here but everyone has it. The best solution would be to use a decent photo editing program Like Photoshop, Corel Photo Paint, etc. to resample the image. There's also some free editing packages like Gimp or PhotoPlus that should work nicely.

I just put in a few pix and had to resize one with MS Paint.

The gallery software uses file size in bytes to determine if a file is too "big". There is nothing that limits picture dimensions, only file size, as you could have a 100 x 100 pixel image that is larger in file size than a 1280 x 960 pixel image.

However, reducing the dimensions will generally reduce the file size (as will increasing the compression).

One program that I have been using since summer is FastStone Image Viewer.

I looked on the C-Net and DownLoad.com website for digital image manipulation programs. It was the highest recommended program that would meet everyone's needs for resizing digital pictures. Their web site is: FastStone Image Viewer

I'm a big fan of "The Gimp".

Open source and free to use.

    http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

You need to download two files.
The GTK+2 Runtime Enviornment, choose based on your operating system.
    The Gimp installer.

It's a lot like a free version of Photoshop.

The GIMP is a good program and is approaching PhotoShop as far as being a professional level program. It will even take some of the plug0ins that PhotoShop takes.

However, it might be way to advanced for most computer users when it comes to working with their photos and/or graphics. The most common question found in discussions of uploading photos/graphics to community message boards (and not just this one) is "My photo is to large--what does that mean??" or "How do I make my photo smaller??"

My suggestion is to recommend smaller programs that are easy to use. For basic manipulation such as resizing the dimensions and the file size then FastStone is a good one. And, it costs the same as The GIMP and is easier to install.

Several other free programs that I have downloaded but not installed yet include Infraview and RawShooter.

Picassa might be good, especially for those who need organization, but I am leary of programs that are sponsored by Google! and Yahoo! and that contain advertising to justify their being free.
