    WASR Before/After

I picked up a Romanian WASR a few weeks ago. But, I just didn't likesomething about it. After looking at it and thinking a bit. I decided it was the color and finish. There really was no color to speak of, and there most definitely wasn't a finish.

So I set out to Home Depot... I was looking for the Russian Red but didn't quite make it there. Settled on Minwax "Gunstock". Ironically... It looked closest to what I was looking for in the redish shade. With Minwax Helmsmmen poly.

Sanded... 3 coats of stain, and 6 coats of poly, and this is what I came up with. However, I might go an additional coat of satin just to tone it down a bit. Still not sure yet... I JUST got it back together! lol

What do you think? I know... It's a WASR! But the mags lock up tighter than a drum, and the thing is straight as an arrow.

I like the finish. It did looked washed out a bit, so good choice.

That orangish color you seek is shellac.

Thanks folks! My first attempt at anything like this. I was surprised at how easy it was. Very little time involved. More time in drying than anything. The poly.... I used a heat gun, and did all 6 coats in a matter of hours.

Without the dimples to hold the mags tight, how did you remedy the side play? Looks great!!
