    RUGER AMERICAN SCOPE

Just ordered a new Ruger American in 17 HMR. Thinking the best I'll be able to pull off on my property is about 250' or so. Will have to shoot across the back yard at an angle to get that far. I'll be using a bench with sand bags. Would like to hit quarter size targets at that distance. Starting at the lower end of the price range, what should I be looking for?

I have a Simmons 3-9x40 on another rifle that I'll put on it for now.

Well I went with a Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 mil dot reticle for my RAR. I wasn't willing to spend more on the scope than the rifle, and I got the rifle for $300. At the time, I was able to get the Nikon for $275. Although I'm pleased with it, if I was to get a better rifle, like an RPR, I'd get something that was mil/mil and FFP instead.

You could look at Athlon optics. They seem to have nice features at a nice price point.

To hit quarters you have to see them. I would start with something in 12-14X range on the top end for magnification and go from there.
I also suspect you will be shooting at closer rimfire ranges such as 15-20yds, and need a scope that will focus down to these distances. These 2 will fit that description.

You will also want a thinner crosshair, some heavier ones can almost hide a quarter at 100 yds if not do it. No dots. Clear glass is a big help but to decide on which is clearer you need to compare them side by side, outdoors. A peek at the corner of the gunshop tells very little. You also want adjustments that track accurately and repeat. Nothing is worse then a scope that moves 1/4" with one click and 2/3" with the next when sighting on small targets.
Once you start shooting smaller targets you will find that quarters are too big at the 60 or so yds you say you can shoot and you will start to look for dime or smaller targets at even longer ranges. The 17s are very accurate for the most part and keeping your shots in a quarter @100yds is more a "can the shooter do it" then can the rifle and ammo. If they ever improve 17HMR ammo and make a match grade version I would suspect they would stay in a nickel at these ranges.

Same scope on eBay for $99.99 shipped. No rings with this one. I believe the RAR has a Weaver mount.
