The OP doesn't want to out the range, but I will gladly I've had similar experiences at Firearms Exchange. Their SOP is to see that you have the forms for any NFA item. somethingsomething people making illegal guns somethingsomething liability something something posted on the door of the range. Some of their RSOs sit outside the viewing window and watch their phones instead of the shooters.
To be fair, the one time I was in there with an NFA item, the guy didn't actually want to look at the forms, he just wanted to ask if I had them and assess my response. After I said "why do you need to see my tax records?" he pointed at the sign on the range door and said "it's our policy". I pulled back the padding of my case to where I had some copies at and he said "okay, you're good" before i could even take them out. He went on to say that people with shorties had injured themselves, and one way to keep people safe was by demanding that all NFA items show proof of registration because people who go through the trouble of doing things the right way aren't usually stupid enough to hurt themselves.

The only response should have been "I'm sorry this happened, stop by and we'll refund your money".

Since that wasn't the response, OP, you need to let us know what range this is. Other's should be aware so as to avoid this non-sense.
