On Sunday afternoon, Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones announced that he will be offering an opportunity for educators to learn how to defend themselves and potentially protect the lives of their students.

Sheriff Jones tweeted that he will offer free concealed carry classes to teachers in Butler County, OH. Jones emphasized that there will be a limited number.

On Thursday, he shared a Facebook video, saying, “the current way we do things in the school system needs to be changed.” He also called for “armed guards in the schools, we need to look at metal detectors. This is not going to stop or go away, but we need to be prepared and not have our heads in the sand.

Hundreds of Ohio teachers sign up for free concealed weapons class

(CNN)Hundreds of teachers and school employees in an Ohio county have signed up for a concealed weapons class their sheriff offered in response to last week's deadly shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones announced the free training on social media on Sunday evening and said there were 50 requests in 20 minutes.

He closed sign-ups on Tuesday morning after receiving 300 requests.

I'm not against this, I just wish that teachers who did want to carry in schools just had to get more training than the average civilian CPL holder. So if you're going to be a faculty member that carries, there should be stages of classes in concealed carry, active shooter, disarming/diffusing situations, firearm safety, live target courses, etc...

I don't think giving every math teacher a gun helps...I think giving the teachers who really are ready to help defend the lives of themselves and others and train accordingly are greatly needed.

Just how much training does the average school shooter have, that a teacher needs to be specially trained in order to return fire from someone shooting up the building?

And, just so you know, there ain't nobody giving anybody a gun, math teacher or not. These will be volunteers that will go get some training and then buy their own.

And as far as the general topic of this thread... Doesn't Ohio have restrictions similar to ours as far as carrying concealed in schools goes?

I wonder how much training DEA agent Lee Paige had at the time he shot himself in that school classroom full of parents, students and media?
