Most places do not accept the state ID with veteran notation. Partly because they’re national chains and it (state ID) varies per state, if it’s even offered in that state, and partly because the guy behind the counter at the SOS doesn’t know what a DD214 is or how to read it, so they usually in my experience take your word for it. I’ve had that happen several times.

Last I knew, big chains like HD only accept SOME of the IDs used to identify military / veteran status. The VA card for example is supposed to say service connected on it. Otherwise a Retired military ID or active military ID.

    Not true at all.

I have never had a problem with the state designation on my driver's license, and the process at the time, was to send the DD214,and the honorable discharge to the SOS in Lansing.
The criteria for that designation is spelled out in the guidelines, established by the state SOS,not some clerk behind the counter.

We can agree however, that in most cases they take your word for it, at most places.

...Just for expedience,I show one of my my old "dog tags" that's on my key chain, when I use the vet discount at ACE hardware.

Yeah I tend to have my VA card with me anyways but the few places I’ve tried to use the veteran designation on drivers license are big chain stores that had a list of photo examples of approved forms of ID. The list didn’t include any state issued ID

    The VA or the state?

With state it’s relatively recent, VA I ... will rant for a while and will just leave it at that.

Neither. I was referring to Cabela's offering a discount for vets which WAS what the thread was about when it started out.
