Bushnell what? They have binos from $100 to $600+. Magnification isn't everything in binos. Optical quality is just as important. With good ED glass, 10X should be more than sufficient. I've spotted at the Straits and at Whitefish Point and didn't have a problem.

That's the problem. Go down to Jay's in Gaylord and compare different price ranges. Look at small objects all the way across the store and see which you can see the most clearly through. Before you go, do some research to see how much they cost at B&H Photo or Optics Planet. If the price is close, buy them. If not, buy something like a box of ammo or something because you used their time and expertise. Then go home and order online. Your wife will thank you and we all know what a happy wife means. You'll even get a lot of use out of them. Something in the $3-400 range should be suitable for your needs. FYI--Leupold makes great scopes but their binos usually aren't that good. Nikon makes great optical glass.

If possible try to compare optics outdoors. The short distances and lighting inside a store does not compare to looking at a tree 300 yds away in very bright sun or cloudy conditions where haze and mirage come into play.
Not all stores will allow or are set up to let you do this, but they are out there if you look.
Check out bird watching sites for optic reviews and recommendations. They are the most critical spotter and binocular users out there.
