    Shooting on state land

Looking to sight in my rifle, don't need too long of range. Looking to shoot paper targets on state owned land. I am in SE michigan and I see that St. Johns Marsh is a State Wildlife Area. Based on the map on the DNR website, I do see that there is a wildlife refuge, but the other land is labeled "General Area - Open to hunting..." etc. Going on the laws I see, unless its posted somewhere, I should be able to trek out there and shoot some rounds off?

Anyone have experience with the area?

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can Target shoot on public land in SE Michigan. You would have to go to one of the shooting range, DNR run several.

You are wrong, but don't let that bother you. The laws on this are a little convoluted.

You can shoot on State Game areas, provided that they are not nature preserves, not posted, and have no limiting "land use orders" against it. You may not shoot on/at State Parks or Recreation areas if they don't have established firing ranges, even if they do allow hunting in some section of that Park/Recreation area.

This is what I have read. Was just looking for confirmation that I was understanding it correctly. I live 20 minutes from St. Johns marsh, much better than driving to The Pit in lapeer or similar.
