    Military surplus ammo question

I picked up several boxes of .38 Special ammo from a friend this past week. He knew nothing about the ammo. It looked like regular ammo and was in a military metal ammo box. When I pulled them out, I saw a message on the side of each box that said that these cartridges are not suitable for civilian or law enforcement use.

So, am I safe to use these bullets in a modern 38/357?

Can you post a picture of the box and some of the ammo?

I had some Old World War II 45 ACP it said for military use only but I shot it it was 230 grain full metal jackets.

Head stamp is “PETERS 38 Special”.

Exact same length as my standard Remington .38 +P ammo.

Post a picture by hosting it somewhere, then use the icon that looks like a picture on here. You put the address of the image in the cell that pops up and the internet makes the picture appear on here.

Commercial type boxes? Did someone hand write that warning or part of the printing on the label ?

Yes. Commercial boxes of 50 each with original printing on the side (not handwritten).

Are they industrial cartridges? Hilti and others have marketed single shot industrial guns that use the .38 S&W Special cartridge case with steel 'bullets' to project force at a distance. Typically used to take down clinkers in calcining and steelmaking furnaces.

The industrial cartridges are loaded to pressures far beyond SAAMI specifications and their steel 'bullets' are hard on rifling. The industrial guns are usually smoothbored. The spent industrial cartridges can be safely reloaded, however.

Yes. Very similar to that. This is Remington 130 grain.

So it looks like I’m ok to shoot this ammo in a modern gun.
