    Thanks for all the suggestions. I really like the idea of milling out a slot and installing a different type of wood. It will be a good winter project and will post a pic when finished.

    Another possibility.... mill out the damaged area, smooth and sand the resulting slot, then place a couple case heads removed from spent cartridges in the slot... polish them first. Fill the slot with clear epoxy/resin.
