    Basket Weave

What is the significance of Coppers/Leos wearing leather basket weave belts and holsters? Is it just a fashion statement?

Departments usually specify what Brand, model and finish of belt rig, holsters and leather gear for their officers.

Why a specific Dept calls for the basket weave finish is a matter of preference and possibly tradition or just sticking with what they’ve always used.

Looks better, wears better. Look at used weave holsters vs the glossy smooth patent leather ones. The weave almost always looks like new still.

I have basket weave holsters from the early 90’s that have seen a life of duty already, and still look decent. Glossy leather holsters I’ve bought in the last 10 years look much older, just because every scratch and scuff is immediately noticeable.

So, the answer is: It is a practical tradition, with no better alternative.

There are equal alternatives, but none that exceed.

Seems like I recently saw some police somewhere that had more kydex/ rigid holster and gear. Can't remember where I was. Also, there were a few of them together and I noticed they didn't match the others gear...like they have no real uniform requirement.

Some depts. are quite leinent on equipment choices.

Furthermore, depts can have different requirements for different positions(Ie. Traffic Patrol vs Investigator vs Corrections).

thats for sure I know a lot of cops on the east side. I know the GPF chief carries a 1911 in a leather holster, he mostly wears khakis and a polo with the gun on his hip. Most of the detectives carry what they want it seems.
