I find 45acp to be much more pleasant to shoot than a 9mm or a 40. It's a matter of physics. The .45 depends on a large mass, moving relatively slowly, to impart its energy to the target to cause damage. The 9mm is relatively fast in order to give the lighter bullet more energy. The resulting recoil is faster and sharper with the lighter bullets out of necessity to achieve the desired affect on target.

I relate it to fish biting. 9mm is like a bluegill strike, you get a little wiggle. .40 is like a bass, it smacks pretty good. .45 is like a pike, it's heavy but slow.

If you want more felt recoil, shoot .45 out of a 3.5" barrel. 10mm will be like a .40 with extra oomph. Or move to revolvers. .357 packs a good punch, plus with a revolver, there's no slide or delay mechanism. Or go rifle. A light RAR in .30-06 kicks a bit. Or magnum shotgun loads. I was also surprised at how much .303 Brit kicks, even with a heavy No4. That may have more to do with the metal buttplate though.

Might just as well go to a revolver, and try .357 mag, .44mag or larger if your looking for more felt recoil.

I don't think that would be a good idea.
