I have a Kimber 1911 with a full length guide rod. Would like to swap it out for a GI type. Question is, would I need to change the recoil spring? It's a new gun, only fired a few times.

Hey! teacher! leave us kids alone!
Thanks. Didn't think so. Think I'll pull one out of one of my other 1911's & try it out. A FLGR is a PITA to break down.

you might be cleaning too frequently if you find it that troubling. Try spacing out cleanings to 1000-1200 rounds or more. Shouldn't be an issue on a quality firearm.
