I shop Dunham's a fair amount because they have a decent selection, good prices, aren't cowards like Dick's, and you can still find knowledgeable gun counter personnel. But this caused me to send off an irritated email.
Come on Dunham's, be better.

I imagine it would hurt pretty bad if someone hit me over the head with it!

That is the way the manufacturer, Trinity Force, labels that model. Other retailers selling the same model use those same words.
They use that term because it sounds bad ass and they know gun owners are macho and will buy it
“Assault scope” doesn’t bother me a bit if anything I respect them for not being afraid of the term and trying to sanitize it or not carry the item as so many other chain stores do. I also believe that “Shall not be Infringed” means exactly that and that I should have every right to own a real assault weapon if I wanted to.
It's like tactical only worse.
That's actually in the model name that the manufacturer gave to several of their optics: https://trinityforce.com/product-manuals/
So it "Assaulted" someone to be put on Sale?
