    Meijer (wifi) anti-gun?

While waiting in line at Meijer, I thought I'd browse MGO and a couple other boards I frequent.

I couldn't connect and received strange messages (no connection, 'The connection is not private', and "you're trying to access a page which is in violation of your internet usage policy.")

When I disconnected from Meijer's wifi, all pages loaded normally.

Is this policy just a restrictive internet access so their employees don't waste time surfing the web, or is Meijer opposed to gun sights?

What you're seeing probably isn't (yet) anything to do with being anti-gun. Most corporate entities that offer wifi will make you click on a button about agreeing to their terms of service. You have to agree BEFORE you start using the wifi to surf stuff.
Here's where the problem - most modern websites run on HTTPS, with the "S" standing for "Secure". In order to force you to agree when you start browsing, the wifi service redirects whatever you want to see over to their agreement page at first. Your browser really doesn't like having data from what it expects to be a secure page coming from somewhere else that is NOT secure. Some browsers will let you proceed if you click through some advanced options... some don't.
The trick is to find a site that allows outdated protocols, that DOES NOT automatically force you to use httpS. That way, when your browser tries to load... say... http://www.chicagotribune.com and suddenly gets hit with a "man in the middle" authentication system, it doesn't object and lock you out.

Once you're connected, it's time to turn on your VPN service so that even IF the wifi is trying to block "objectionable" sites, it can't see what you're browsing.

I too discovered Meijer only wants you to use their WiFi for the sites they want you to visit. I wrote to corporate twice about this & have yet to get a response. Whatever, I won't stop shopping there over it, but, it's a piss poor way to make your customers feel wanted. They sell ammo, targets & other various shooting stuff. Guess that's what makes me the most angry.

Talked to one of the girls that works at the Taylor store. She said It's just part of the algorithm the server uses to block out sites that could be harmful to their employees & customers. RIGHT !

When I'm sitting there waiting for the BOSS to finish shopping, I turn WiFi off & just use my phone.

Blocking site categories is pretty common from a business standpoint at the firewall level. Particularly for guest wifi but internal as well. We block a bunch of categories at our office: weapons, file sharing sites, gambling, pornography, "extremism", etc. It isn't because we're anti-gun, just legal BS to cover the company's backside

That error is not a content block. The message is simply telling you that the connection is not secure (queue DrScaryGuy's post above) and that continuing to the site via unsecure HTTP *could* be a threat.

This message if very common when a (server) SSL certificate expires or if the server/cert is misconfigured. While I can't see the options available to you under "Show Details" (in your screenshot), when you get this message from a standard browser (e.g., Chrome, IE, Firefox), you are presented with the option to "go back" (do not browse the site) or "continue" to the site, albeit with an insecure connection with the latter.

If your (phone) browser supports it, the next time you see that, look at the details of the certificate.

I found the same messages trying to use their Wi-Fi to shop for some bourbon so it's not just gun related.

I have vpn on my phone, my tablets, and my laptops.
Surprisingly, routing data through a third party and encrypting/decrypting often makes me surf faster because my data isn't getting held up by some "man in the middle" filter trying to decide if what I'm looking at is acceptable or not.
