The group was hunting early Thursday morning in Westminster, Oconee County, when the incident occurred. According to Capt. Robert McCullough of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, one of the men in the party got out of his stand and was mistaken for a deer by another member of the group just before 8 a.m. He was shot through the upper body with buckshot, WYFF reports.

I have never seen what a person walking around in the woods looks like from a distance through a rifle scope, but I do wonder how this happens.

I'm inclined to agree. In most of these situations all I can think is that the thought going through the shooters head was, "Hey, something's moving, let's shoot it then figure out what it is."

I guess everyone's different. When I pull the trigger I am aiming at a particular hair on the deer's body - not just the body!

There isn't a deer in the world big enough to make me take a questionable shot. I don't even do running shots. There'll always be more deer.

Michigan man shot his brother today with a muzzleloader, thinking the brother was a wounded deer that they were looking for.
