    308 rifle build

Ima throw a Hail Mary with this one.
So, a friend wants to buy/build a rifle.
    These are his parameters;
    308
    Not an AR pattern
    Deer hunting
    Target shooting
Semi auto first choice, bolt second
    Steel/wood not synthetic

He came up with an H&K kit, but at the price, I told
him he was missing something...he was.
I believe there would be additional issues running
hunting ammo through a 7.62 NATO rifle due
to pressure differences, though I'm not studied in this area.

He is very mechanically adept and technically savvy. He runs a Bridgeport and CNC mill and lathe at work. He would be thrilled to build from a general kit rather than buy outright. Something like Molemans work, however, would be way beyond his experience/skill level.

A full kit, with 80% lower would be perfect for him, but he does NOT want an AR pattern rifle.

Thanks for any suggestions you have!

    Joe

You didnt say what his $$$ range is, there are alot of guns out there that will serve as a great base, both in auto loader and bolt. I have No experience with kits for rifles, now I will say 7.62 is loaded to higher pressures than .308, SO if you have a rifle chambered for 7.62 you can run .308 all day long. But a gun chambered for .308 it is not advisable to run 7.62 in it. There is alot of info out there on this subject do you're home work on it/or him as the case may be.

Actually the 308 has the edge in pressure over the 7.62 NATO, 62k psi vs 58 k psi in round numbers IIRC.
There is a difference I believe in how they are measured, the 308 follows SAAMI rules while the 7.62 is ruled by NATO which follows CIP rules.

Yes you are right. But because they Are different measuring tools it shows that way, nato rounds are loaded with hotter burning powder and they are technically longer rounds(but I’ll be darned if I can see it with my naked eye) and require more head space. Shoving a longer round into a chamber not designed for it put the bullet in contact with the rifling before its fired, which is a bad thing. It will cause damage, i really dont understand why but it will, its not a IF but a WHEN. When I was younger I did ALOT or reloading and shooting, my dad machined some go/no go gauges I really didnt understand them till I missed a step on a few rounds and they would Not chamber. The sportsmans club dad belong to had a few barrels on the wall from people running nato ammo thru non nato barrels both 7.62 and 5.56 with bulges and splits around the head space area.

    Well, that took a turn.
    Not entirely UNexpected.
As for price, prolly in the sub $1500 range.
Obviously great projects for less will be greatly appreciated.
