Remington 870 DM Picatinny Rail Options

My brother, whose household was previously a gun-free zone as "the world is a kind and loving place," as they'd tell their son to believe, has purchased his first firearm to defend his home in these trying times.

He got a stock standard Remington 870 DM with wood furniture after a bit of steering from me, though I wasn't there physically at the time of purchase. Supposedly they had a magpul version with the pic rail and post sights but he didn't see the value added in the cost. Whilst I'm sure he'd be fine with the bead sight I'd like to get him pic rail and red dot for his upcoming birthday [around Mother's Day].

Is the top of the DM already drilled and tapped? Or would the side-saddled mount work or work better? Also would a SIG Romeo5 be about the cheapest I can go for shake awake and/or 5-digit battery hour life?

I got the magpul version with the ghost rings sights and pic rail. Definitely worth the money. Have not shot it yet though.

I would have said as much if asked and/or if I was there. But I was not and in the end I'd have bought him a red dot anyway so assuming the side saddle rail mount works it'll save 20 dollars overall.

I would disagree with him but its too late.

    No big deal.

I would buy that rail for sure, and even look at one with ghost ring. Or just ghost rings and forgo the red dot.

I have the scattergun/wilson combat ghost rings on my 870. No rail.

Partly just because years ago I had no faith in the cheap red dots and was not going to put a $700 red dot on my 870.

Im not sure if its drilled, email Remington.

look at the mesa mounts they are nice and not too pricey.

    Sig is a good choice.

I have an 870 that I actually mounted a rail and an optic on it, and it was really terrible to shoot. I had the Magpul stock, and had to add the risers to get a halfway decent check weld. Ruined the feel of the gun, and I've shot a lot of rounds through it. Just my 2c, but would a non rifled barrel with rifle sights be an option?

If he'd bought the magpul version, yeah...

Otherwise it's buying a new barrel which would actually cost more than the whole gun did since Center Mass is selling them at Soviet Milsurp prices. I figured is new barrels for my mum's SXP are like $130 that 870 barrels would have to be less than 100 just due to scale of production. I was very wrong.

Look around on Gunbroker or Ebay for barrels. There are times when a offering goes for a reasonable price.

Also keep in mind Mossberg makes their own line if barrels for the 870. Carlson appear to be good as well so open up search terms.

I'd give you rep for this but the Socialist system claims I must redistribute my thanks first.

I should note the DM series are built on 3.5in receivers and with Winchester SXPs the 3in and 3.5in chambered barrels aren't interchangeable. Is that true with 870s as well?

Mesa tactical makes a saddle mount with pic rail for optics. You can choose between aluminum or polymer shell holders. $125 vs $99. Mesa makes good stuff but I have no experience with this exact product. I have the aluminum saddle and top rail for my Supernova Tactical and it’s been rock solid. I use a FF3 on mine and it’s never lost zero. I do think that the supernova mount also goes through the top screws as well as the pins vs the 870 just using the pins.
