    Fitting mating surfaces

In my days as a Die Maker when we wanted surfaces to match we used a product known as Prussian Blue on one part so that when it was put together there would be a mark showing the areas of contact or interference. I want to use a similar technique to fit a couple of gun parts together. Is there a similar product used to fit gun parts?

Prussian blue was a oil based product that really didn’t dry. It made a mess mess and easily got all over everything. I thought of using artist oil paint but wasn’t sure if that would work and how easily it would clean up. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Why spend a bunch of money when the soot from an oil lamp or a candle has been working for centuries.

This is what I've used most in 25+ years of fabricating, machining, amateur gunsmithing, etc. Never seem to have a bottle of Dykem around, but I always have a Sharpie.

But, this is the only real alternative that I know works decently for finding high spots...

Thanks for the suggestions. The sharpie type of ideas won’t work because there is no friction. I’m looking to identify contact points and either spread them out or maybe undercut the area.

See if you can find some carbon paper. Place between and strike. Remove ink with grinder/stone, repeat until you have desired bearing.
