I must not have the right kind of sharpies and candles.
Sharpies dry too fast to work and my candles are not sooty enough.

Try a little of your wife's finger nail polish, get it ready to go, put on a light coat of nail polish, then move your part into contact, it should leave a paint mark if you make the contact before the nail polish dries.

In the good old days "Gear marking compound" was just a White Lead (pure lead oxide)pigment in a thick grease carrier.

I keep thinking about this whole thing. Are you fitting wood to metal? Or, is it plastic to metal or metal to metal?

If you are working with wood, I would stay with the soot/lamp black. Else you might try china marker/grease pencil. I wouldn't use anything that dried and hardened.

I think this is going to be the best. Stays where I put it, transfers to mating surface easily and cleans up easily. Now i just have to explain to my wife why I NEED lipstick.
