    I think Joe hit on the issue. All of my targets hang from chain or rubber. They go flying around when hit and have to hang at an angle as part of the deflection. I would angle yours and flip It around to see if you have better results.

    My 1/2" x 8" AR500 targets are hung like this. They swing & sway no matter where they are hit. The rubber hangers came from the manufacturer. I have another set that are hung from old fire hose. (No pics yet.) A whole lot cheaper than chain, (Which usually fail after one good hit.) The rubber/hose actually heal when hit.

    The dings on yours look like they happen when the steel is hung too rigidly.

    If I wanted to shoot steel with 7.62 or similar high velocity rounds, I would back up & shoot at a 5/8" gong @ 100 yds or so. I'm going to order a 10 or 12" soon for my range at the cabin.
