    Google is your friend.
As usual there is the typical junk info being put out by people speaking outside of their wheel house.
Been a good 14 years since I went through my AK phase.
Short recommendation, get a 545, an ultimak(red dot), a blackjack, and a solid stock.

Owned a 762SAR, sold it, regret it somewhat

    Still own a 545, vz58, and a Galil556

agreed, I have been bigoted to some degree against PSA in the past, and I trust rob. He said one of the PSA was very good, so, to me ..... it must be good.

I knew I shouldn't have started this thread - by going down this path, I would be adding a new caliber, new guns, a larger safe, the list just goes on and on and on....

Thanks for the responses. I have a lot of learning to do before making a decision.

Unless you are going to order off gun broker, and pay a nice premium I do not think you have a ton of in stock choices.

I think you should start a feed back thread, you post up stuff in stock, in your price range and get quick feed back. I mean of course familiarize yourself with the common stuff, do not go to deep into stuff that is not commonly imported anymore unless you look up what they are going for on gunbroker.

By all means if you have the cash, anything is for sale, but people are asking crazy prices right now, they just starting making yugos with chrome lined barrels which was not available before, that might be the best deal out there right now, or the PSA that rob ski liked, I cannot remember the name.

    BillR - that's a nice looking Yugo.

A lot has been said already. There are zillions of styles and little differences between various models and/or countries of origin (as far as style/features). Lots of different folding stock options out there.

They are dead nuts reliable. Not nearly as accurate as an out-of-the-box AR. The AK platform was made for "minute of man", able to be operated and maintained by someone with 5 minutes of training, or basically none. Back then were hard times in the Soviet Union and the rest of the Combloc. They are easy to maintain.

Parts are everywhere. They are just not the best platform for optics, there's the side mounts, upper handguard mounts, etc around but it's just not a crazy stable platform unless you get a milled receiver unit and a very beefy mount.

They are an absolute hoot at a gigantic range when you add a Golf Ball launcher to the muzzle....

Belay that; they are an absolute hoot almost no matter what. They make a very distinctive sound when they operate...

Edit: In what to look for, any used one built from a parts kit may have a worn or corroding/dark barrel. Any of those new ones with new chrome barrels sound like a great idea. Otherwise, even a non part-matching kit build from years back can still be a great example of one. Either way, it's not a precision rifle, it's a battle rifle, and moreover the one design that has produced more units on the planet than anything else.

Jp they are better than minute of man, they as 2-3 moa s realistic with good ammo and good trigger factory built gun. Not much off the crappy low end ar15s. There is a big over lap the nicest ak especially nice 223 ammo can hold it's own or outshoot a poorly built ar15.

Same with sks, it's gets a bad rep, it's not far off an old 39-30.

sigh. this is an old, poor and terrible myth. both my AKs shoot better than I do. spend any amount of time on youtube and you will find this myth is easily and repeatably debunked.

I love my WASR as much as my MAK90. get one. shoot it. they're all fantastic, fun and reliable.... just like ARs.

I would not want many home built, cheap kit builds, many most american builds but it seems against all odds palmetto new aks are good to very good.

I am with you in arsenal military factory built, Romania, Bulgaria, Chinese, Egyptian, whatever I'll probably take it.
