whywould you buy blank ammo ?

Was just looking @ an email ad from Sportsman's Guide & looked @ some ammo ads they had. Noticed that under rifle ammo they had several calibers & varieties of
blank ammo for sale..& got me wondering..what use would you have for blanks ? In a movie or maybe a stage production, I could see a use for it..but for a firearms owner ?
Is it used to scare away pests ? I would imagine if I used it for that purpose I'd have a LEO showing up @ my place.

Since we are responsible for every bullet sent out blanks make very safe "warning" shots.
