    Build it.... it will shoot.....

Start with a virgin action, or one printed already.

Stock, obviously, whatever you choose for the application. Basic BR stock doesn't need to be expensive. Can be, but doesn't need to be. Something properly bedded that fits you and go. You'll get more out of money spent on a rest and bag for it to ride in.

Last thing I'd do would be start with a factory boxed rifle then make mods to it.
The above you'll hopefully sneak into the 1500 range, but likely exceed it. But, you'll have a rifle that will shoot correctly versus a boxed rifle (Savage, etc.) that will need work to get straight. Will the savage TR shoot out of the box. Yes, of course. Let's not piss everyone off in the forum all at once.
I'd probably leave Tikka and Bargara out of that statement though as far as a boxed rifle doing what it should out of the box.

I'd much prefer a single shot action. Or something I can put a bob sled in. On my 204 it can be a PITA when trying to load just 1 round without looking. Drop that sucker and it's stuck on the side between the action and the mag lips.

Thanks for the links I'll be busy perusing those for a while.

Clearly there's a lot of options that are still relatively within my price range which I didn't really count on. So I guess I need to take the time to do a lot more research. I can drive myself nuts on these decisions.

Op, are you really wanting to get into benchrest shooting? Those stocks alone are crazy heavy, then the rest and bag set up. The rifle basically slides on the bags, with you just breathing on the trigger. Not really, but you know what I mean with the 40# stock, oiling the bags....

No. My personal feeling is if my shoulder hands and cheek aren’t on the gun then I’m not really shooting. I don’t want to go that far down the bench rest path.

Those setups are cool and damn accurate and all, but just not for me.

To expand on my previous answer:

I’m basically looking for something that takes MOST of the gun out of the equation and let’s me and the ammo I make be the variable. I don’t compete and don’t plan to I just like knowing what I’m personally capable of.

I feel like the LRPV I have basically did that for me when I found the magic load. 5 shots, .7” @ 300 yards. I feel like that’s about the best I can personally do while still being hands on. If I hadn’t lost my cheek weld I probably would have done a bit better.
