    Squirrel Hunting on State Land

I've been reading the hunters digest and other outlets online and have some questions regarding squirrel hunting on state land in MI.

    1. I didn't see anywhere in the 2020 hunters digest mention firearm restrictions for squirrel hunting. Maybe I missed it? I planned on using an older 22lr rifle.

    2. If I can use my 22lr rifle, is there a 5 round limit for these firearms like there is for deer hunting? All my 22lr rifles have tube mags that hold more than 10 rounds. I can't find any information on this subject.

    3. I've read online forums that you can use a 22lr rifle in the shotgun zone, but I can't find an official MI source stating this.

    4. Can I hunt squirrel on the Brighton State Park land? That's the closest state land to where I live and where I would like to hunt.

    5. It appears all I need to be legal is an orange vest or cap and a base license?

    6. Does anyone here hunt Brighton State Park land? I've never hunted state land before and I want to do it safely and without disturbing other hunters. I don't want to accidentally come across some other hunter's "spot" and be confronted about it.

Yes small game hunting is legal in Brighton Recreation area.
Yes you may use a .22LR anytime EXCEPT deer season Nov.15 - Nov.30.
No you are not limited to 5 rounds in a .22
    Correct, vest & license.
I have hunted the area and live adjoining the area.
Your problem now is muzzle loader season & late doe seasons are open & Brighton Rec. has MANY deer hunters still in it.
Just be CAREFULL and watch for orange in trees or on the ground.

    Thank you for the information.

I didn't plan on hunting until next year, after deer season. But I appreciate the word of caution.

Neither muzzleloader or late doe are currently open, just FYI. You have/had a window from 12-1 to 12-3.

On that note they will run back to back from 12-4 to 1-1-21 along with late archery.

That being posted on the afternoon of 12/3 I didn't think he would make it out before the season opened.

Sorry for the few hour misinformation.

Fortunately we have EXPERTS here that will nit pick every post & point out ANY misinformation.

Thank you for saving him from a serious violation of the law.

Leader, since you're familiar with Brighton recreation land, can you give me ideas of where to park and I could hunt? I'm terrified of unknowingly crossing a property line or doing something the police state doesn't like and getting trouble for it.

The green shaded area is Rec. area
Stop in at the DNR office at Chilson & Bishop Lake rd. Get a Huron Clinton Metro Park map of southeastern Mi.
Great detailed map for the area & DNR officers will tell you where you can park & hunt.

That certainly wasn’t my intent, I’m sorry you construed it as such.

My intent was to inform OP that there was a break in the various deer hunting seasons and that there was a calendar window for him to hunt if he so wished to in the future.
