    Hello!

    Hey!

I found you guys on Facebook but quickly realized how limited things are over there (no sales, etc) so I migrated here.

Originally from the Keweenaw now living in Royal Oak. I'm still very much missing the ability to have a backyard range for shooting so if anyone has any hot tips on private rural ranges or old quarries that they're willing to spill the secret on... I'd be incredibly grateful

Welcome, I spent a few years in Houghton - nice place to visit .

The closest thing to a quarry is the pit in Lapeer. Being renovated by the DNR, not sure when it's reopening.

Houghton's the place, man! MTU, great views, and some of the best pasties in the state.

So the DNR is turning it into a range? I'll have to keep an eye on that, I've got family that I visit up there on occasion. Thank you!

The pit has been a DNR sanctioned shooting 'range/area' for a long time. It's being upgraded and based on the recent photos - is no longer a 'PIT'. Before you know it, MI Shooting Centers will be charging $15 per day.

Back when I was at MTU, food service companies (Marriot/Sysco/Gordon) wouldn't go that far north - so the food was somewhat home made and pretty good in the dorms. Gotta love rutabaga.

Oh, and you could still get a glass bottle of Mountain Dew from the bottling center over in Hancock.

Yeah that's a lot more fancy than I was imagining. Was supposed to be open in October based on what the guys in that thread were saying. I'll probably wait until spring time to give it a look.

How long ago were you there? I'm a younger guy but about 10 years ago when I attended we had pretty standard dorm food. By that time though, there was a lot of great local bars and restaurants. I still head back up there about once per year. Never did hear about the glass bottled Dew!

I was there in the mid-late 80's. My freshman year we had rabbit ears on top of the TV. NBC during the day and that same channel turned into CBS at night - the damnedest thing. Days of Our Lives at 1pm and David Letterman at 11:30pm. And there was no Taco Bell in town so 7 guys would pile into someone's boat (parent's old hand me down car) and head 99 miles south to Marquette for .29 cent tacos. I haven't been back in 15 years. Some pretty good memories though.

For as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom — for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.
