I'm thinking the car floor mat idea is going to be the best / cheapest option, mostly because my wifes' car (the one we take the range because it's got trunk space) came with both carpet mats and the plastic floor mats. The carpeted mats? Yeah, they're still in the plastic shipping packaging from the manufacturer...

I use a rifle cleaning mat. The padded ones, I got one that is like 15x60 from Midway. Works great since its grippy on the bottom so it doesn't slide around, amd adds a little cushion under my arms.
