Came across a Model 1917 revolver and I'm trying to assemble its history; appreciate any input.
Frame, cylinder and grips bear the same S/N #. Minor rust in barrel and chambers but cleaned up fairly well with oil, brass bristle brush and elbow grease. Minor pitting in barrel. Holster wear at muzzle and on blade.
Butt is stamped: "U.S. ARMY MODEL 1917; No. 88xxx".
Underside of barrel stamped: "UNITED STATES PROPERTY"
Port side of barrel stamped: "S. & W. D.A. 45"
Top of barrel stamped: "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. USA";"PATENTED DEC. 17.1901.FEB.6.1908.SEP.14.1909"
Blade sight is integral to barrel.
Starboard grip has small chunk of wood missing. Lock up is tight.
Original leather holster (years have been unkind to finish); not stamped/embossed "U.S.".
Any thoughts on vintage? Value as collectible?
