Something stinks at the Lapeer Pit

Most will remember the stories last year about the complaints of the nimbys on Roods lake rd.

State congressman Gary Howell pulled a classic political ploy of if you can't eliminate something, enlarge it until it is unusable without government oversight and regulation. The nimbys smiled.

The "improvement" touted by Howell as a wonderful facility for firearm enthusiasts looks great....from the locked gate!!

Maybe I missed an open period as posted. The first pics are from Sept 20, 2021.

The second 2 are from today April 12 2022.

Posting pics from phone so be patient.

    Tenthumbs -

I believe that it's closed simply because of staff shortages. I spoke with Lori Buford (DNR shooting range specialist for the state of Michigan) last year about this.

They had two people to staff, but one had a medical emergency and left. The other guy was retiring. The state posted job opportunities to fill the positions (without any luck.)

Lori and I discussed possibly getting (MGO) volunteers to man the booth three days a week. I don't remember why that was a no-go but it may have had something to do with having to paying people to work instead of volunteering. If my memory serves me, I suggested paying by the day, but that was probably the sticking point - the state is not set up to do that.

I just sent her an email asking for an update. I'll report what I find out.

Echo Point in Allegan county is a state range and is unmanned. Why do they need someone at the pit?

    Thank you dramey82

@ JLHOG I don't think it has ever been open since the "improvement". it used to be open every day and people had an annual clean up day.

I think as I said in the OP, that this was a way to appease the nimbys with a can kick down the road. note that Howell is not running for reelection.

Remember, they are fresh off a semi victory in restricting the drag strips hours of operation just up the road.
