And when it is open it’s 11a-7p or 9a-5p seasonally-exactly when is the normal working person supposed to be able to utilize this public range? That is if the booth were staffed…

I believe that it's closed simply because of staff shortages. I spoke with Lori Buford (DNR shooting range specialist for the state of Michigan) last year about this.

They had two people to staff, but one had a medical emergency and left. The other guy was retiring. The state posted job opportunities to fill the positions (without any luck.)

Lori and I discussed possibly getting (MGO) volunteers to man the booth three days a week. I don't remember why that was a no-go but it may have had something to do with having to paying people to work instead of volunteering. If my memory serves me, I suggested paying by the day, but that was probably the sticking point - the state is not set up to do that.

I just sent her an email asking for an update. I'll report what I find out.
I don’t buy it, those two people in the whole of the DNR were the only ones qualified to staff this particular range? I agree with tenthumbs, sometimes smells fishy…

A perfect example of Government intervention that takes a low cost shooting range that some great volunteers would clean 1 or 2 times a year and change it into a costly facility you have to pay for but the hours are only convenient for the workers there not the public IF they decide to open. Awesome job DNR

The state gets a lot of federal funds earmarked for public ranges and hunter safety. Call your Congressman. Those Pitman Robertson funds require the state to maintain public ranges. In the past they have simply dumped the money into their general fund and pointed towards the resort on Higgins lake as their Pitman-Robertson expenditure. They use it a couple of weeks per year to offer Hunters Safety training. It turned into a big deal when they announced the closure of the range in Waterford awhile back. I'm sure the DNR is in no hurry to open or maintain a public range. They do it because they have to.

I highly doubt it will reopen. The government has achieved it's goal.

Not the only ones qualified.... the only ones that would take the job.

I got my response from Lori Buford.
The wildlife division staff are working through the hiring process now. The anticipate having it reopened by June 1.

I still don’t buy it-the DNR is big enough to have many people on staff that are qualified/eligible to fill those roles. It amounted to a choice some bureaucrat made not to put someone in those positions and elected to leave them in others. They just weren’t ‘essential’ positions in the grand scheme of the DNR.

According to the sign it is not open at all Dec 16 through April 30th.

Why not put it all under video surveillance? that way it can be open during all day light hours, and if any vandalism happens they can see who did it.
