    Small game opener Sept. 15

    Small game opener Sept. 15

Small game seasons open statewide Sept. 15 for the following species:

    Cottontail rabbit and snowshoe hare.
Fox and gray squirrels (black phase included).
    Ruffed grouse.
    Woodcock
All woodcock hunters must get a free woodcock stamp, which includes registration with the federal Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP).

Season dates, bag limits and small game hunting regulations are available in the 2022 Hunting Digest and at Michigan.gov/SmallGame.

Don't forget the whitetail Liberty Hunt on 9/10 & 11.
And the early antlerless on 9/17 & 18.

Some fresh, day old, back straps would be great to smoke then sit and eat while watching Saturday football!

I think the season opens too early...I don't go hunting until there has been a few frosts and maybe even a freeze to kill any parasites that may be on game animals (fleas, worms, etc).

I was always told this when I was younger "wait until the first hard frost" then I started to wonder how people down south hunted, and then noticed that the rabbits I would shoot in Feb would have flees
