I am actually considering using my crossbow during gun season. A 50 yard shot is a long shot on my property with the hills and trees. Seems as an overkill using my .308, but that was dads gun.

I have never owned one but have always heard a 30-30 or .35 lever was the "Michigan Gun" I think the only other gun I will ever purchase would be a older Ruger .44 Mag.
As far as someone getting into hunting, If I though it would be the only gun they would be getting and may be moving onto other game, I would say to go with 30-06 or 270 good for anything in North American

308 is what my brothers and I mostly use on my hunting property

...but I've been hunting with my 375 Win Marlin lever gun for a lot of years. As well as my lever in 35 Marlin and an old 30-30 Win 94. I've also taken deer with a Marlin lever gun in 44 mag and with 7.62x39 in Ruger Mini 30. I put together an AR upper in 350 Legend and one in 450 BM and have taken deer with them as well. I really like the 350L, but will hunt this year with the 375 again. I also tend to use some of the lesser calibers during the early doe season or later on doe after I've killed my buck.

Last year I used my Dad's 120 year old Savage 99 in 303 Sav on a doe. It was one shot at about 75 yards.

But all of the above except perhaps the 44 mag will work out to 150-200 yards. The 308 a bit farther.

M99 of course. Only way to be sure.

Its me, a real pic, a harvested doe.

but I really shot it with an 11-87 rifled bbl.

This year and last, 350L, smacks the pi$$ out of them.

    ????

We're only allowed 13 options in a poll. Sing out, like others are, if you have a different caliber in mind.

In addition to .30-30, I might use .357 Mag, .44 Mag or 12/20 ga. Zone 3 or 2.
