So every retailer I have talked to won't order the All Weather Henry because Henry has been nonresponsive about when they'd be shipping this gun again. I can't find any stainless pistol caliber lever action (besides Rossi) under $1400-1500 which is my top end.

So....how bad is the recoil on 45-70 lever guns really? There are a couple nice Marlins here in the classifieds or I can grab a new Henry all weather in 45-70 for just over $1k.

Recoil is relative to the shooter’s tolerances
Shoot mild std loads and it is not bad in Marlin and Winchester levers. Step it up to some of the modern stuff and they can get somewhat brutal. Tolerable to sight in and hunt with, but not something you will want to do for a weekend afternoons range trip.

    I'll second that.

Do not forget that rifle weight is a crucial factor in the recoil equation, inversely proportional to recoil. Increase the gun weight by, say, 25% and the recoil goes down by 25% ~ roughly.

While recoil energy determines how hard the blow to the shoulder feels, recoil velocity determines how abrupt the blow to the shoulder feels.
In the table below rifle weight is given in pounds, free recoil energy is given in foot pounds, and free recoil velocity is given in feet-per-second. All recoil values have been rounded off to one decimal place.

    Cartridge__(grn@MV)____Rifle Weight__Recoil energy__Recoil velocity
    .45-70____(300 at 1800)__7.0________23.9_________14.8
    .45-70____(350 at 1900)__7.0________37.9_________18.7
    .45-70____(405 at 1330)__7.5________18.7_________12.7
    .45-70 +P_(350 at 1900)__7.0________37.9_________18.7
...and for comparison, the most widely used lever round...
    .30-30____(125 at 2175)__7.5________6.6__________7.5
    .30-30____(150 at 2364)__8.0________9.4__________8.7
    .30-30____(150 at 2400)__7.5________10.6_________9.5
    .30-30____(160 at 2400)__7.5________12.7_________10.5
    .30-30____(170 at 2200)__7.5________11.0_________9.7

The recoil energy and recoil velocity figures are taken from various sources including Chuck Hawks, the recoil nomograph in the Handloader's Digest 8th Edition, various online recoil calculators, the Remington Shoot! program or calculated from the formula given in the Lyman Reloading Handbook, 43rd Edition.

I second the sportmansoutdoorsuperstore. Fast delivery, you will need a ffl. for them to ship it too, most ffls. cost about $20 for a transfere.

Thanks guys, good info. Based on that I’m going to keep my search for a stainless/all weather lever action in 357, 44, and 30-30. Lost a bid on one yesterday on gunbroker, also the fees really add up quick on GB with shipping and tax etc. think I’m going to just keep my eyes peeled on the classifieds here.

As a conclusion to this thread, I was able to pickup a beautiful Marlin 1894CSBL in 357/38 from the classifieds here yesterday from Punisher911. If you see this, thanks again sir! I’ve been saving up for several months and I’m
excited to have a rifle of my own for when I go shooting with my uncles and my grandpa. Already have a range trip planned for this weekend.
