I think this would be nearly impossible. Even if you offered 10k reward, and spent 50k on ads 90 percent of 1911 guys wouldn't know or wouldn't care.

If you had some more info, you might be able to reach out for records at the very least.
For example, an acquaintance did a nice spread like dirt describes. Reached out to the unit historian, and a few FOIA requests for records from various repositories, long story short he got Springfield to do a blogpost and maybe some other platforms to cast their wide net. --and even then they never got the sidearm back, just records showing it was turned in for scrap...but it completed the story and gave this fine gentleman an even deeper connection to his relative.
