Have an AR-15 rifle, or interested in learning more about this popular modern sporting rifle? The Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress will be conducting the 1-day MCRGO rifle basics class taught using the AR-15 rifle. This class is the result of a year long collaborative effort between DSC NRA and MCRGO certified instructors. It is intended for gunowners new to (or interested in) the AR-15 platform, or those who may be looking to enhance their basic rifle skills and knowledge. So, not only does the class focus on the AR-15 platform, but much of the class material is applicable to any rifle as well (basic marksmanship, safety, handling etc). The class will be taught by rifle instructors dual certified by MCRGO and the NRA. The class starts in the morning with classroom instruction, then moves to the rifle range for afternoon live fire exercises (where the student will receive 1 on 1 coaching from a DSC certified instructor). More detailed information is below. Instructor contacts are:

For anyone interested in this AR-15 class, or just needing some rifle range time, there is weekend open shooting dates and times at the DSC 200 yd outdoor range (public most welcome). For prospective AR-15 class students, your rifle should to be sighted in (zeroed) at 50 yds. Having your AR-15 zeroed prior to class will maximize your time and learning for the afternoon shooting exercises. The DSC outdoor rifle range is an excellent venue to prepare yourself (and your AR-15) for the class. Or just come out and have some fun.

The outdoor rifle range has 20 covered lanes (concrete floor with individual benches) where target stands can be set up at 50, 100,and 200 yds. In addition, there are two 25 yd lanes expressly available for the initial steps in zeroing your rifle. If you are bringing a new rifle, or rifle with new sights/optics, then you must fire a few rounds on the 25 yd lane to start the zero process (and get on paper). Obviously with any shooting range, be sure to bring your eye and hearing protection. The range is operated by DSC certified range safety officers.

the rifle range is located at the main DSC property, at:
    49800 Dequindre Road
    Shelby Township,MI 48317

open shooting dates and times (prior to May 20):
    sunday 4/23 11 am - 3 pm
    sunday 4/30 11 am - 3 pm
    saturday 5/6 11 am - 4 pm
    sunday 5/7 11 am - 4 pm
    saturday 5/13 11 am - 4 pm

And note that the rifle range spring/summer open shooting hours are typically Saturday & Sunday 11 am - 4 pm

I will be at the rifle range later today and will confirm the latest rates for seniors, active duty military and LEOs. I do know that the pistols ranges have discounts for seniors, military & LEOs. I will post that info later today, thx

Both the pistol and rifle ranges offer discounted range fees for active duty military and active LEOs - there is no range fee discount for seniors. However, there is a substantial club annual membership fee discount for seniors (see link below).

Here is a little more background on the AR-15 rifle basics class being taught May 20 at the DSC. Per the original post in this thread, it is a course developed jointly by DSC dual certified NRA and Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) rifle instructors. Essentially, it is an adaptation of the well respected 1 day NRA rifle basics class with similar content and approach - after all, firearms fundamentals are just that, fundamentals. While the NRA class covers all rifles (bolt and lever action etc), this MCRGO class teaches the fundamentals using only the AR-15 rifle platform. The instructional focus using just the AR-15 allows more specific AR-15 information to be covered in a 1 day class environment (including the afternoon range time coached 1 on 1 with an instructor). Even focused on the AR-15, this instruction has wide applicability to rifle handling and shooting in general. So, if you have any familiarity with, or have taken, the NRA rifle basics class, this class will have a similar feel to it - but immersed in just the AR-15.

Another feature of this class is the wide range of AR-15 rifle platform alternatives and configurations that will be covered and available to learn about, a sampling being:

    - the more "traditional" 20 inch barrel AR-15 (Colts original "civilianized" M16)
    - AR-15 carbines in 16 and 14.7 inch (with pinned muzzle device) barrel configurations
    - DI (direct impingement) and gas piston versions

There will also be a number of different sights and add-on optics available to experience for anyone interested in those options, such as:
    - "traditional" AR-15 fixed sights, as well as fixed flip-up "BUIS" (back up iron sights)
    - red dot (with & without 3x magnifier)
    - Trijicon ACOG (advanced combat optical gunsight)
    - LPVO scopes (low power variable optic)
    - 1.25x - 4x
    - 1x - 6x
Examples of many of the popular AR-15 accessories will also be discussed and demonstrated. The DSC class can offer this wide array of AR-15 configurations through both club owned rifles, as well as instructor owned rifles. So, again, you do not need your own AR-15 rifle to attend this class as various AR-15 rifles and ammo can be provided.

A question one might ask is who's teaching this course? Certainly a fair question if you are spending a whole day plus $100 and you are not familiar with DSC instructional programs. Below is a summary of the DSC instruction team:
    - Chief instructor is Bob Savo who is both a long time NRA training counselor and one of only 5 MCRGO master instructors state wide. His depth of knowledge and experience spans virtually every firearm discipline (including reloading), as well as years participating in service rifle activities and Camp Perry competitions. Bob is also a chief range safety officer.
    - all of the other instructors share these instructor certifications:
    a. NRA rifle, pistol, and CPL (personal protection)
    b. MCRGO rifle and CPL
    c. NRA range safety officer
    d. all have taught rifle, pistol, and CPL classes

Again, if you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Just a reminder that the DSC rifle range will be open this weekend: Saturday and Sunday 11am - 4pm. I will be one of the RSOs on Saturday, so, if you stop by look me up (ask for Terry). The non-member range fee is $20, and you can shoot as long as the range is open. So, if you show up at 1pm (or 11am), you can shoot until close at 4pm - all for a total of $20. There are 25yd "sight in" lanes, then also 20 covered bench lanes where you can set your target at either 50, 100, or 200 yds. The weather looks like it will cooperate for a change (finally!).
